You'll get this problem for a variety of reasons... anything from scratched up discs to defective DVD drive motor to defective/weak laser. Use DVD movie in another DVD player to see if it the disc works. 80% of the time it is not too scratchy if it works in a normal DVD player. If it works in a normal DVD player but not in the PS2 then you definitely have a DVD drive problem. If you get this problem for new discs that are in good condition then most likely the laser is week or defective. You can repair this by replacing the DVD drive or the laser with an known good one. If want to try to fix it yourself and you have access to another PS2, preferably one that did not fail with these same symptoms, I'd be willing to walk you through it.

Cant change language to english go to system configeration but dont have english and dont know what languages are coming up.

To change the language settings on a Playstation 2 console, proceed as follows:

1. If there is a game disc in the console, remove it and then power the unit on/off.

2. When the opening screen appears, choose the bottom option of the two. You will see the foreign text, then the time and date beneath it.

NOTE: If you do not see the date, scroll through the options until the date appears.

3. Press UP once to get to the language select option.

4. Press X to select this option, and then select the choice to the right (English) by pressing X.

5. All the text should change to English.

6. Return to the Time and Date Setup and verify or set your time zone.

7. Press CIRCLE to exit the configuration menu.

8. Insert the game disc and navigate to the Browser menu to select the game or browse the memory card.
NOTE: If the PS2 is currently in another language, then you need to figure out which language it is in so that you can look up the translation for ENGLISH. Once you have that figured out, it should be a matter of changing it back and calling it a day.

My playstation 2 won't play any disks period. How can I fix this?

To start the auto diagnosis feature

Press the standby/RESET button on the front of your PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system to turn on the system. Make sure the indicator light turns green.

The Main Menu screen will appear.
NOTE: It might take some time for the main menu screen to appear.

Using the directional buttons, highlight [Browser] and press the (X) button.

Highlight [System] and press the (X) button.

Highlight [Diagnosis] and press the (X) button.

Highlight "On" and press the (X) button.

Insert a disc.

Auto diagnosis will start automatically.
The system will make adjustments that might allow previously unplayable discs to be played.

To start the disc after auto diagnosis is complete (for 30000-50000 series):

Press the (O) button twice to return to the browser screen.

Using the directional buttons, highlight [Browser] and press the (X) button.

Press the (X) button to play the disc.

if still not work then apply this
Just take some rubbing alcohol and cotton buds. Gently clean the lens. If this won't help - the laser needs to be replaced. Don't worry, they are cheap now.

It turns on but will no longer read discs.

Hello,

You can also try the steps below. Its from PlayStation Forum:

1. Turn off Playstation®3.
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

The current Recovery Menu supports:
• Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
• Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
• Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
• Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
• Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
• System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System

If the above steps still does not solve the problem, then I think will have to update your Ps3.

Update your PS3 (in the settings menu the 1st option).

Go on the internet browser on the PS3 then go on the menu press triangle then on one of them there are delete cookies and the delete the others as
well as cookies.

You could also try this as well: put the PS3 on then press the eject button (with no disc in) then hold it and switch the PS3 off at the back with
your finger on the eject button still holding it, then put it back on and the fan test should be working this may cool it down. It might be over heating.

If after trying the above options and it still does not solve the problem, then maybe the lens is weak and that's why it cannot read any disc.

But if your problem is not still solved, then maybe you should call sony for further assistance.

I wish you good luck.

I'd check with who made the disc . Maybe they know about the issue or you may have gotten a faulty disc.

My PS2 is having a wierd problem.

It is either a dirty or mis-alligned laser. It's best seviced by a repair shop.

1 Answer

Disk format

1) Turn on machine
2) Open Tray
3) With tray still open hold the reset until the tray closes.
4) Tap the reset once.
if there is a format disc error, it says "Please insert a Playstation or Playstation 2 format disc." It is accompanied by a sound similar to the browser, but with a more tense noise. This is caused by a disc being so badly scratched that it completely fails to recognise the format, or if there is a problem with the laser. Auto-Diagnosis (PlayStation 2 system) 1. Turn on the system without a disc inside. 2. Once at the Main Menu, press the triangle button to enter the Version Information Screen. 3. Highlight the "Console" option, and then press the triangle button again. 4. Next, press the X button, highlight "On", and then press the X button once more. 5. Highlight the Browser option from the Main Menu, and then press the X button. 9. In the Browser, an icon of the disc should appear on the screen. Highlight this icon, and then press the X button to read the disc. 10. If the auto-diagnosis is successful, the disc should load properly at this point.NOTE: The auto-diagnosis feature will return to "Off" the next time a disc is inserted.
