    Hi

Same problem exactly when loading XP. Does seem to be RAM issue but strangely both ram cards appear ok when used in the slot that provides video RAM. XP loads OK.

However when the second RAM slot is used with either RAM card XP generates the same error message and won't load.

One RAM card is 128 the other 256. and both work fine provided only the video slot is used.

    Any thoughts?

Yes, it should run WinXP. The minimum system requirements to run both Windows XP Home and Professional are 233Mhz, 64Mb RAM and 1.5GB hard drive space. I have a Toshiba Tecra 8000 that still runs XP, a little slow, but has run smoothly for 5 years.

The setupdd.sys error is most likely a due to a defective hardware like RAM. Try installing only one ram if you have two to see if either one is defective; it should work for most users.

AC POWER LED FLASHES AFTER I PRESS POWER ON BUTTON 4 SHORT 1 LONG 3 SHORT

If the power LED flashes an amber sequence - whatever it is - the motherboard is bad. If you have to replace it, eBay would likely be your best bet - stay with 8100 models that are 750Mhz or faster - and you can probably pick up something incomplete for around $20 and do the swap yourself, as these Tecra 8100's are pretty easy to work on.

Oh..that one is hard to do specially to novice. I would suggest not to do it. It would be hard for you to dismantle your laptop bit by bit and it is very risky. You might it end up damaging your laptop. Take it to a qualified technician to get it done. okay..:-)

Where is the "on" button for a toahiba tecra 8100

it's right behind the left speaker on the left hand side. It could well be hidden behind a sliding door - slide the door backwards, and you'll see the on-off switch.

Viola!

Toshiba Tecra 8100 PIII laptop not booting

It could be a hard ware isuse. Try this.

If you have extra memory or removable Ram ( usually located on the bottom under a panel) Try removing it and starting it, with the ram removed. Then try putting it back in and starting it. If it works, it may be bad memory or it just needed to be reseated. Do this also with the cd drive and wireless card if it is removeable.

also try this with the battery, plug it in and remove the battery and see if it starts.

alot of laptops, like computers will not boot if there is a hardware issue.

The Beeping is a code. The number of beeps and how it beeps usually indicates an issue.

you could look the beep codes up on the toshiba website is the support center.

Good luck.

CPU Upgrade

You pulled the processor out of your laptop ... that was a brave move ... generally laptop boards are fully integrated so there is very few options on changing the processor ... also because of the extreme heating conditions the heat sink bonding is very critical ... make sure you replace this properly or you will have overheating issues in the future ...
