That is because you connected the printer to usb before installing the software.
Ensure that the account that you are using has administrator privileges( it is not limited).
Do a system restore to one week ago see here:

How to perform System Restore on Windows... -

Then do the following.

Unplug printer USB.
Go to control panel >> installed printers in Windows and remove (delete ) your printer from printer list.
Use printer disk to install driver or download and run driver from website.
Follow driver installation wizard.
Plug back printer when prompted from installation wizard.

If you have lost the installation disk, you can download the installation driver from manufacturer's support website by clicking this link

On the page which opens, select and download the drivers according to the operating system of your computer (Windows Xp/ Vista..)

make sure the usb cable is properly connected and the driver is installed.
Go to printer and faxes option and choose the printer model which you installed just right click on it you will see the option of use printer online. Also I suggest you to change the usb port and the cable also still if you facing the problem follow these steps, right click on my computer and go to properties then hardware in that click on device manger and check there is any other device is listed if it is there just remove it and click for scan for hardware changes when he prompt for driver reinstall the driver cd.
Make sure you install the driver properly and check the test print also .still if u fail check all this setting and follow this steps, 1st you install the driver disc which is come along with the printer and when the software prompt you to connect the cable then plug the usb cable and follow the instruction.

I lost my Lexmark X2250 install CD, downloaded the software from Lexmark site and then I get a "Call to RegDBCreateKey Failed" error - how can I fix this please?

It sounds like the drivers for the Lexmark aren't the right ones. I would go to device manager and remove anything that has the ? mark beside it. Then unplug your printer (From USB). Go to lexmark's website and download the newest XP driver for your model. Make sure and get the full package. Install the software first and then plug your printer back in. If the software asks you to plug it in, do so, if not, wait till it installs before plugging it in.

Trying to install my lexmark 1270 printer to my laptop

It is not listed, but follow these instructions I just posted for another customer to install the printer.

The X1200 series uses the same driver. (X1250, 1260, 1270, etc.)

PRINTER PROBLEM.

For the Lexmark 1270, go to www.lexmark.com and click on DRIVERS AND DOWNLOADS. Then use the DRIVER FINDER. In SEARCH BY MODEL, type in 1270 and you can choose a driver from there.
