Convergence problem

By jmox on Mar 22, 2006

" "
Yesterday morning I turned on my TV (Toshiba 55H70) and noticed that there was red and blue "shadowing" throughout the entire picture. It is more severe around the edges of the screen. According to the research that I have done so far, I believe it is a convergence problem. I have already tried to adjust the convergence to no avail. When I go to the convergence controls by using the menu on the TV, the red "+" symbol on the screen will only move up and down (not left or right). Also, the red "+" is slightly tilted so even if it could move from left to right, I would not be able get it to get it to properly align with the green "+". Is there another way to alter the convergence. If so, how? Any advice or solutions would be greatly appreciated.

-   convergence is out and cannot re-align. Trying to locate the CRT guns to replaice. I heard they could be shorted out. -   Guest

-   I turned on my TV ( Toshiba 42H83) and the red bleeds off to the right. I tried to adjust the red/blue alignment but the "+" for the red is slightly angled on the vertical. When I try to adjust each sector the "+" on the right of the TV won't move left to right only up and down. As well the bleed effect is more pronounced on the right side of the television.-   Firewalker

We need a better description of what you mean by shadowing. However I am assuming:
1. You mean it ''bleeds'' off to the right when you have something with a hard red/blue drive.
2. When you turn the contrast and color down a bit it gets better.

unfortunatly I cannot tell you how to fix convergence, but I can think of some other possibilities.
In this case the red/blue emmision of the crt is dying off and going into saturation when driven hard. To fix, replace with a new picture tube/crt. In some cases you can get a little more life out of that tube (with a watchable picture) by having the screen, focus, cathode bias, and drives slightly readjusted. It will take someone with experience in doing these adjustments on a weak tube to get it looking as good as possible.
Given the construction of the cathodes (guns) in that crt, only a very low level crt reactivate should be tried on it. The hard rejuv most crt testers give is highly likley to completely destroy the cathode on that crt.

I had a problem with my TV colors not lining up. One day I turned it on and the green was out of wack. I checked this message board and replaced the STK chips, bad soldering and all led to me just giving up on that and buying a whole new Convergence Board ($185). I replaced the missing silver box on the new board and I just plugged this in and though now my Green lines up okay, my red is out of whack. Is there something I am doing wrong?
Can anyone help me? Did i miss a step? Frustrated......Bruce
