Question about Sharp Aquos LC-42D62U 42 in. LCD HDTV
I had the same problem with my 37" Polaroid LCD TV. Two bad capacitors on the power supply. I'll bet you have the same problem. I replaced them and the buzzing is GONE!! About $2.50 each. Apparently, the next thing to happen is that it won't even turn on. The same solution works for both problems. If you take the back of the TV apart and when the circuit board is exposed, plug it in and turn it on. You'll hear a couple of capacitors buzzing just like your TV does. Replace them. Here's a link that also might help. TRY IT!!!

Below is an image of rear side of your TV, Sony KDL-40W5500
Top right corner is marked there and possible cause of noise seems back light inverter board, there are high voltage going to CCFL inside LCD panel and seems high voltage leakage causing that buzzing/ fuzzing noise.
Replace back light inverter board upon voltage leakage confirmation.

Testimonial: "Thank you very much for the very prompt reply. This seems a very likely cause. My TV is only a week old so I will contact the supplier. Thanks again."
there is a bad or what i call intermittant connection on the power supply board. when the bar and hum appears try firmly bumping with the palm of your hand the side of the set. if the hum and line go away then your set will have to go into the tv shop and the connectors on the p/s mod have to be reseated also the solder connections should be checked... this should help you a lot.
