Question about Microsoft Windows XP Professional With Servise Pack 2 (e8503040) for PC

1 Answer

Administrator password I am having a problem. I let someone use an older computer of mine for a little while. It is about 3 years old and has Windows XP on it. When I turn the computer on it ask for the administrator password. I don't know and neither does the one that borrowed it. I have tried turning the computer on and tapping on the F8 key as someone suggested to put it in "safe mode" but I get a screen that says: "press F1 to continue or F12 for set up utility" ok I press F12 because F1 only brings me to the same administrator password screen. When I press F12 I come to a screen which ask me for the set up password, which I don't know. What do I do? I have tried several things on this site. I have also tried every p.w. I think it might be and nothing. thanks Dawn

Within the three types of Windows user accounts, only the administrator account allows you to change another accounts' password. So if you want to reset Windows password of another accounts, you need to change your account type to administrator firstly. Moreover, if you need to give a user more access to perform tasks like installing software or other system changes, you also need to change your account type.

Steps to Change Windows User Account Type

1. Log on your Windows machine with an administrator account.

2. Click "Start" - "Control Panel" - "User Accounts and Family Safety" - "User Accounts".

3. If you forgot Windows password of all administrator accounts, you'll need to reset Windows administrator password even you can access your computer with a standard user or guest account.

Software Windows Login Recovery allows you to create a password reset disk with blank CD/DVD or USB flash drive. Download and install Windows Login Recovery.

2. Burn a password reset disk with a blank CD/DVD or USB flash drive.

3. Reset Windows password to be empty.

Now you can log on to your computer without passwords. By the way, you can reset any account's password with this software.

Something about Windows User Accounts

Administrator: A administrator account is intended for someone who can make system wide changes to the computer, install software, and access all non-private files on the computer. When you log on to Windows with a standard user account, you can do anything that you can do with an administrator account. But if you want to install software or hardware, reset Windows password of another accounts, etc. the computer might ask you to provide a password of an administrator account.

Guest: A Guest account allows people to use your computer without having rights to access to any of your personal files. This can be useful if you want to quickly allow someone to use your computer. A person that log on computer with guest account cannot install software or hardware, change system settings, or create a password.

How to reset admin password

Reset Windows 7 admin password is not hard in fact, as long as you follow these methods to do.

Method 1: To Reset Admin Password with Administrator Account
On Win 7 logon screen, click user and "Switch user" to choose another administrator to sign into. Turn to Control Panel and navigate to User menu. Choose the account you want to reset its password, and remove its password. And then set a new password for it.

Method 2: Reset Admin Password with Password Reset Disk
You have two ways to get password reset disk. One is create it when you still have the administrator password. The other is to create it with third-party software, such as Windows 7 password genius.

Similarly, on Win 7 logon screen, after type wrong password, click link "Reset Password" to go on. Or insert password reset disk into Windows 7 computer and boot it from disk. Windows 7 Password Genius runs, at the same time, all accounts and password list for you. Choose the administrator account, and click "Reset Password" to finish Windows 7 admin password reset.

I have a Dell latitude e4310 laptop my 10 year old has somehow changed the password and locked my computer. Can you please help

If you haven't set a password for the Administrator account you could try to log in as an Administrator then change your password back. First you need to change how users log on.

1. Click Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Click User Accounts
5. Click Change the way users log on or off
6. Deselect Use the Welcome screen
7. Click Apply options

Exit Control Panel. Then Restart computer, hold F8 when rebooting and choose SafeMode when prompted.

When Log on Prompt appears type in Administrator as user and leave password blank ( this is the Windows default password)

This will let you boot into Windows where you can go back to Control Panel, User Accounts and change your account password.

Then just reboot normally and enter new password.

Hope this helps. Thanks for using FixYa.

I GOT AN GOOD OLD ARMADA 7800 THATS BEEN NEGLECKTED FOE YEARS!! AND NOW I AN NOR REMEMEBER MY PASSWORD. CAN YOU HELP?

If it's old enough to have Windows 95 or 98 on it, you can just cancel through the password and it usually will let you in. If it has Windows NT or higher on it, it's a little tougher....

One thing that used to work on those older systems, is that if you booted the machine using a boot disk or cd (a linux live CD would probably allow you to browse the files) you can then browse to

c:\winnt\system32\config

delete the file called SAM (this should return the password to a blank password, so if I recall correctly, after deleting the SAM file and rebooting, you could login with "administrator" as the user name and no password)

I would suggest doing this only if you are willing to take a bit of a risk of corruption. With a machine that old, what you may want to do is find a Linux distribution that is made for older computers like "puppy linux" and play around with a new operating system.

I've done this before for a few clients of mine. Windows 2000 allows this solution to work, won't work on windows xp.

Try it: http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htm#1

You'll need to download the floppies or the CD images and use them to create a bootable media.
