I bought a new Akai 55" Rear-projection TV back in August 2005. It has been working great up until two days ago. I now get all kinds of weird behaviour:
- Sometimes, all inputs vanish except ANT and s-video1.
- Sometimes the television is fine for about 5 minutes, then it blinks off to a blue screen
- Sometimes the video is perfectly fine, but the sound crackles and cuts in and out.
- Sometimes I turn it on and it just works fine for hours.
Any ideas what my problem could be ??

Re: All kinds of weirdness going on...
maybe your connections are poor
try changing them and see if it works out
but it sounds like a solders problem: they are dry or broken
try and see if you give it a small tap on the side
the picture shakes\dissapears\working good at last
if soo then its that
i guess that you dont have any electric background soo you will need to take it to a tech gay

all in one day my screen started by showing a u look at top and bottom. all three colors kind of separated from each other and therefore made shadows on all the writing and double and triple vision on people and images. then it drawed in from sides and showed some black. then it popped in the back and no picture. the sound then came back on with no picture. so i shut it off and unplugged it. what do i have to get to fix this? thank you, Robert Hopkins
I used" Silerado 1st" solution. I have an Akai pt5598hdix/sms.
I had ghosting.Like 3 colors side by side.
Silerado said with TV off press "mute,1,8,2" then TV on.
I didn't see anything like a menu.He warned to write down any setting you saw before you change anything. But for me nothing came up. So as he said the next step try with TV "on" press "Mute,1,8,3" this is another set of adjustments for finer detail. I lined/overlapped all the lines up or down or side to side useing the channel and the volume buttons and then held the enter button down until the TV flashed 3 times. Then I shut it off and when I turned it back on It was perfect.
Something like this Id have someone who knows there way around electronics, a qualified tech or someone you trust really well :-) Does the crackling affect the TV picture at all ? My first guess would be dust and or dampness on the audio components. Sometimes this can conduct electricity across small pc chips and reak all sorts of havoc. I had an old Tomas electric organ once, and it actually caught fire because two speaker wires were rubbing together and eventually wore thru the insulation and shorted out, but it was also making alot of crackling and static noises. Try raising and lowering the volume low to high and high to low and see if the crackling noises gets worse. Some audio amplifiers put out quite a bit of power, so I wouldnt trust leaving the TV on without a fire extinguisher handy.
Hear say has it that Toshiba who made alot of the internal parts for this model can offer more help than Akai.
As for the other problems... first Id try leaving the TV unplugged for a day or so. This is a great TV, picked mine up for 400 from my boss who baught it a few years back for 1400 from Sams Club. If I hear a solution I'll be sure to come back here and post it.
