Question about HP Compaq Presario 700Z Notebook

Lock-up My notebook periodically freezes up; sometimes within minutes, somtimes within hours. I have read in many forums that this is a common problem with this machine, but I've not run across any real solutions or even definite causes for this problem. The processor is AMD Athlon 1.5Ghz with 512Mb ram.

Re: Lock-up

There is a known issue with these laptops that casues the CPU to not cool correctly. There was a fix supplied by Compaq that helps, but doesn't always totally correct the problem. This kit currently listed on Ebay under item #6862252317 Have you upgraded the memory? This can also cause issues, even when you use original Compaq ram. If you have, try running it without the upgrade and see if the lockups still occur.

Re: Lock-up

1.-update yours chipset driver via VIAarena 2..-update your se twister video driver 3.-remove from your laptop the fallowing file from micrisoft:Q317277 4.-disk index off 5.-video mem at 16MB. 6.-For myself, I am not using synaptics driver, I removed and auctomatically use microsoft touch pad driver.I increased my page file size to 950. Let me advise all you, it is a recipe, I tried upgrading only drivers, and then I get some freezing, only after I removed windows update file:Q317277 i got to be free of crashing also, please update your battery and firmware driver from compaq. in addition to all that, i took my laptop apart and replace the *lousy* thermal pad with arctic silver 3. Works like a charm now - only recommended if your warranty expired Good luck!

Hi there, Our Dell Inspiron 1525 specs are as follow: Windows Vista Home Basic Service Pack 1 Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 @2GHz 2GB RAM - 32-bit OS Symptoms are: - Freezes oftenly after random period...

Do you have any CD's thatcame with your laptop? If so, look for one that has "Diagnostics and utilities"listed under the "Contents". You will have to boot from that CD disk. To dothis, power on your laptop and tap the key to bring you to the "Onetime boot menu". Insert the CD and then select CD/DVD drive and hit key. Select the "Run the32 Bit Dell Diagnostics". Next select the "Express Test" and see if any errorsare detected. If no errors are reported, then your operating system software isprobably the culprit. The blue screen of death can be caused by hardware or software. If Diags pass you probably have a software issue. If you don't have the resource CD press the key while powering the system on. This will run theDell built-in Diagnostics.

Dell d600 freezes intermittantly

sounds like the hard disk drive is slow to spin up. Sometimes older drives don't get all the way up to speed at boot, then with repeated restarts, the drive warms a bit and the spindle friction drops allowing full speed on the drive.
Try running HDD Diags the 1st boot of the day Fn +power button, see if you get any diag failure. Generally, a drive has to be within 3% of rated drive RPM (5400 or 7200) to function

Toshiba M35X-S349 (Freezes Periodically)

Update: I looked at the plug connecting the HD to the PC and pulled it about 1/2 way back off and reinserted into machine. I then pulled the HD back out and noticed that it was not all the way pushed back on and it wasnt parallel to the HD. Basically I am thinking that the HD is not sitting properly in the bay for some reason or another, but I have been running 10+ hours with no problems as of yet. I did reformat the HD so I am going down that road of reloading and letting run awhile, reboot, repeat. Not sure if solution, but looking real good at this point.

Shutting off

i have the same problem...laptop randomly shuts down, but its even done it within a minute of turning it on so i don't think its a heat issue. Sometimes it'll run for over an hour with no problem and never shut down, but other times it randomly shuts down sometimes within a minute, sometimes maybe 10 mins, sometimes 30 mins or more ...its maddening! i'd love to find a solution if anyone's found one. Thanks.

If you can control + alt + delete and start over, then it may/may not work, then they're probably right and it's a software problem and not a hardware problem like overheating.

The first thing I would do is turn off all background programs. Here's how you do it:
Type "msconfig"
Hit 'Enter'
Go to the 'startup' tab
Click 'disable all'
I'd go back up the list at this point and recheck 'touchpad' if it's there. There often is such a thing on a laptop.
Click 'OK'
Restart the computer
When the computer starts back up, you'll have to check a box that appears that says you changed some system setting (or some such), just check and continue. You won't see it again unless you repeat the above process.

See if you continue to lockup.

If you don't, then you know one of those programs in that startup menu is causing the problem. You can repeat the above process and turn them on one by one (as opposed to disable all) (or leave them all off for a faster, smoother running machine!) if you want to and figure out what was causing the problem.
