Question about Western Digital Passport WDXML800UE (WDXML800UETE) 80 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

WD Passport My passport just stopped working. I have a HP laptop that runs Vista. The passport worked fine until yesterday. I get a message when trying to run the WD..exe sync that a problem caused the WD not to work. I went to the WD website and downloaded the exe file and it worked fine but it looked like it started from scratch. This morning nothing - same error message. What's up with this thing? How do I get it back on track? Thanks

I have Microsoft Vista on Toshiba and I was able to run WD Sync but now a days, whenever I start WD sync I get an error that WD SYnc stopped working. It seems it has something to do with Windows Live OneCare program I instaled on my laptop.

1 If the warranty is valid> get another drive and install it according to the instruction set. the hassle is better than trying to fix what is broken or defective without the tools to do so.

You run MS Windows Update to download and install the latest OS updates. Your WD external HDD should be detected after OS update.

For non updates system, try to connect WD to the USB Port where it worked before. If you have 4 USB ports for instance, try to connect it to these ports one try at a time. Windows XP might have assigned one USB port for your device before when it was working just fine.

I have a WD Passport drive that I want to use through a Targus mini USB hub. The Passport drive has power, but it will not install through the hub. Apparently wants a driver and apparently they don't have...

Hi,

The reason your full sized drive works fine and the passport doesn't is that the full sized drive has it's own power supply and only uses the USB for data transfer. The Passport drive requires much more power from the USB to spin up, so, if you want to run it through the USB hub at the very least you will need to replace the USB hub with a powered one.

As for a driver, you don't need one to use the passport on XP that's why you can't find one but the Passport does require a dedicated port(2 for Amperage on some systems) or will need to be plugged into a powered hub or it simply won't get enough juice to fire up. That is the reason it won't show up.

In short, buy a powered hub, or plug it in direct. Nothing else is likely to work.

Hope this helps figure it out

Western Digital removable HD devise not found

For Western Digital Passport make sure you use the prigina;l USB cable or a replacement. They are not all the same. WD uses a propriatary cable with an extra power line I believe.

Problem accessing WD Passport Elite drive

The solution to this is associated with the power supplied by your laptop to the drive. It seems the passport drive needs about 1000mA of current which will be supplied by two USB ports on a laptop. It should be fine with a desktop USB port though is what I was told.

WD Passport Elite 320 - won't install autobackup launcher

I just spoke to WD support...here is how to solve your problem:( I had the same problem and it works great now)
1. Connect your WD ext. drive.
2. Click open Computer.
3. Double click open the WD blue icon.
4. Double click open WD_Windows Tools.
5. Double click open WD drive manager.
6. Double click open the Setup icon for Vista 64 (the other icon
is for x86 windows)
run the setup and it will take care of your problem. enjoy!

WD Passport Elite 320 - won't install autobackup launcher

The problems is this: at this point, Western Digital is not supporting Vista 64-bit with any of their related software. Granted, some things will still work while using the 32-bit version, but some won't, and the backup software is a prime example of the latter.

You might try downloading the latest version of the software from here:

http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=204&lang=en

Chances are, it will still barf, but it can't hurt to try it out. An alternative is to use another backup application; the one included with Vista ought to work. I wish I had better news, and believe me, as a user of both XP 64 and Vista 64, I feel your pain.

Cheers

Nick
