Re: cracked screen

I think that Thomson is the manufacturer or distributor for GE parts, and Global INC is one of their distributers. keep that it mind when looking for your screen. and you might be able to get it at good luck

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

GE 46GW948 shuts off when cold then works fine

This is a classis symptom of poor solder connections that when heated connect well. If you can solder, you should be able to fix this yourself. Resolder any connections that appear to be grainy or have rings. Note: The most likely location of these poor connections are at the convergence ICs. These are large black ICs attached to a heatsink and should be marked STKxxx. There are high voltages floating around inside these sets even when unplugged, so be careful.

Keep me posted.

I would check the low votage regulators, horizontal output and the flyback. The relay is the first stage of the start up process so the standby voltages are suspect as are the oscilation / Hv circuits. how are your trouble shooting skills?

GE 46GW948

you should just need to go from the audio o/p of the tv. to the amp. now the tv will have either fixed or variable audio out. if fixed ok, if variable, you just need to know that the volume out of the jacks in the back is directly related to the volume of the tv, so you will need to keep the tv volume up a ways. now on the amp hook up to an available input, make sure that the input you use is set to recieve an analog signal. this is very important. every amp is different you may need to read the manual on how to adjust the input from analog/digital/audo. good luck.
