No, I've never found one. HP wants you to buy those expensive cartridges. However, you can just leave the empty color in place and ignore the message. It will not print at all without a cartridge in it. When you print black, make sure you set it in your printer options to print from the black cartridge only (there are blacks that use some color in them). Or you can get a black only printer. The HP DeskJet 6122 can print with both or only one ink cartridge installed. The printer driver includes an option to print in gray scale as a substitution for color. If you choose to print a document that has a color other than black and white with only a black cartridge installed, I recommend you select the gray scale print option. To select gray scale, select the printer properties and check the box for gray scale rather than color printing. This selection can be made either at the time a document is ready to print (ie., a one time selection, using the "Properties" box in the print options window), OR as a permenant setting using the Control Panel, Printers, HP DeskJet 6122, "Properties" window. Once changed in the general printer properties, these settings remain active anytime the HP DeskJet 6122 printer is selected to print a document.
Select EconoFast or Draft as the print quality setting in the printer properties. This will prevent the color cartridge from being used.

Try another color cartridge. The color cartridge is used to print grayscale images in Normal or Best print modes, so if one color has run out, the printout will have the wrong tint. With a full color cartridge, the colors can be properly combined to create a composite black.
When printing with Normal or Best as the print quality setting, the HP Deskjet 710C or 720C or 722C series printer will use the color ink to improve print quality output, even when printing a grayscale image.
This condition is typically caused by one of the cartridges failing. Try removing the black cartridge and printing (not copying) a test page. If this prints at near normal speed the black cartridge is at fault and should be replaced. If the printer still prints slowly then put the black cartridge back in and remove the color cartridge, then print a page. Replacing the cartridge that causes the slow printing with a fresh cartridge will resolve the issue.
Black printer ink in HP Printer may fail to be recognized by the printer. Most times an error message will be sent indicating that something is wrong with the black print cartridge. Sometimes the printer may accept to print with the black ink, but the printouts may have horizontal lines and very illegible letters. In such a case a manual cleaning of the print head should be carried out. Hi,The most common reason for missing or incorrect colors is a print cartridge with one of the following problems:
One or more of the ink colors is empty. The black ink and all three colors of ink in the tri-color cartridge must be available or colors will be incorrect or missing. Under normal usage, the print cartridge will run low on one color of ink shortly before all ink colors are emptied.
The protective tape is not removed from a new cartridge.
Contacts on the cartridge are not making proper contact with the print carriage.
Take out the black cartridge once you've determined that you are completely out of black ink. You'll have to rely on the dark hues from the color cartridge to print in black.
Adjust the printer software settings. Once you take out the black cartridge, your printer's software will typically warn you that you are missing a cartridge. Follow the instructions for your printer to allow the printer to print without the black cartridge. Then set the printer to print in black and white, not color. This overrides the black cartridge and allows the printer to access the dark hues of the color cartridge.
Print a test page to ensure that your printer now prints black using the color cartridge.
Print your documents. Bear in mind that your documents may not appear as black as normal. Still, they should be dark enough to pass for black, depending on how much color ink you have and the strength grade of the ink.

Is your new cartridge a refilled cartridge? Some times those have special challenges. Has your cartridge been sitting a while in the box, maybe in a warm spot? Some times even new cartridges dry out a little. Was your old cartridge low or completely gone? Just as a test, if you put it back in your printer does the old cartridge work? Any printer error messages? Can you print a test page or an alignment page for your black cartridge?

Seriously, buy a new printer. Companies sell toner, not printers! The printer is basically a "freebie" and is a marketing vehicle to sell toner. I tossed my C510 into the dumpster. It had four new toner cartridges. System diagnostics said that everything was at 95% or better. The printer had about 1600 prints on it. The first set of toner cartridges (full at purchase!) printed great. Then, I got dotted lines on clean prints. Or, I would get washed out, yellow tinted print and often, there was no black print. I called a printer repair shop and they laughed and told me to chuck the printer - they were suprised it lasted through the first set of cartridges. Lexmark literally "ignored me to death."
I will NEVER buy another Lexmark. The Brother and HP color lazers are probably the best bet. I have two HP B&W's that are paper pumps - an old 4V and a 6MP. The sad part is that I paid a bit more for the Lexmark than the competing HP. You live and then you learn!
