How to fix a bricked wii

Q:What is a brick?
A:To brick a Wii is to damage the console beyond repair - as in 'A bricked Wii has all the electronic functionality of a brick'. To put it simply, fully bricked Wii consoles do absolutely nothing. The term is often used in situations where modifying a system's firmware (without necessarily making any alterations to the machine's hardware) has caused it to become inoperable.

Q: I've heard people talking about semi, banner and full bricks, What's the difference?

A: Semi bricks - Usually caused by installing an update from an out of region game. This is when a small error has occurred in the wii's system menu. If your wii is semi bricked you will not be able to access the Wii Settings.

Banner bricks - This is caused when one installs a wad that is corrupted or has an incorrect banner size. It may also be caused by installing Preloader on the wrong system menu. You will know your wii is banner bricked because when you boot your wii and it freezes after the health screen and/or say the system files are corrupted.

Full Bricks - These bricks are usually caused when the System's IOS is corrupted or uninstalled. The wii will either give an opera error or just a black screen at boot.

Once you figure out the type of brick you have then go here and read the faqs on how to fix it:

Format (Erase) Wii System Memory This option is used to delete ALL Channels and ALL save data that have been added to the Wii console and will wipe the system memory clean, as it was when purchased new. Please note that if you also have a Wii Shop Account, that data should be deleted first (click here for instructions).
To delete ALL Channels and save data
  1. Access the Wii System Settings screen (how to).
  2. Click on the left blue arrow twice to reach the Wii System Settings 3 menu options.
  3. Select "Format Wii System Memory."
  4. settingsformat.gif
  5. If Parental Controls are set, enter the PIN.
  6. If you are sure you want to erase the Wii console's system memory, select "Format."

How can i reset the wii i have the chip in and the hack but some of the new games they playfor about 10 min and then stop freez compleetly how can I FORMAT THE WII

Format (Erase) Wii System Memory
This option is used to delete ALL Channels and ALL save data that have been added to the Wii console and will wipe the system memory clean, as it was when purchased new. Please note that if you also have a Wii Shop Account, that data should be deleted first:

To clear information from the Wii Shop Channel, including records of your transactions and rights to download software:
  1. Access the Wii Shop Channel. Select "Settings" from the list of options.
  2. Select "Remove Wii Shop Channel Account." Once completed, all information will be erased.
To delete ALL Channels and save data :
  1. Access the Wii System Settings screen.
  2. Click on the left blue arrow twice to reach the Wii System Settings 3 menu options.
  3. Select "Format Wii System Memory." If Parental Controls are set, enter the PIN.
  4. If you are sure you want to erase the Wii console's system memory, select "Format."
This option will erase your HBC and Neogamma channel too, if you have softmod..

Hopefully this help.

I just downloaded the most recent software upagrade and the unit has frozen and is making a buzzing noise.

this is probably a simple limited memory issue, that there is no (or very little) RAM (random access memory) left available on the system left to function. If this is the case contact Nintendo for help (mentioned in instruction manual). This could also be a result of a corrupt data upload (update) in software that could be too much or too little of a file resulting in a software/ product crash. You would then need to contact Nintendo to get help with the problem, they may give you a new Wii or give you a refund (maybe...). This problem is common, if you get this problem fixed: wait for coming update for a safer update.

Greetings harry1960,

According to the Nintendo website, this message indicates that there is a problem with the Wii console's system memory and a repair is necessary

I found this information at http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wii/en_na/ts/memory.jsp#corrupt
