We were told our drive shaft on a DC14 went out. The brush rotates, but the dyson makes a horrible noise.

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC14 Animal. The brush control system is designed to make a ratcheting sound to alert you if the brushbar is jammed. The easiest way to check for and clear any obstructions from the brushbar or cleaner head, please follow the steps shown in our online support guide:

http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=650&product=DC14-ANIMAL_US

This should allow you to resolve your issue without further assistance. However, if you've checked the brushbar and cleaner head are clear of threads, hair, or other obstructions, but the cleaner still seems to be making the ratcheting noise, it's probably best if you get in touch with us directly. One of our experts will be happy to run through some troubleshooting over the phone with you to identify the cause of the issue, and will be able to recommend the best course of action. You can call us free on 08002980298 (UK), or 1866MYDYSON (US).

Kind regards,

Jack

All belts are good but brush will not turn

Hi Nabil, it's Jack at Dyson.

If you have a DC14 and the brush bar isn't rotating, it's worth checking to make sure the brush control on the cleaner head is set to 'Carpets', and not 'Hard floors'.

http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc14/dc14-all-floors/my-machine-is-not-working/i-can-see-something-wrong-visual/i-can-see-something-wrong-visual/my-brushbar-is-not-rotating2/does-the-brushbar-turn-with-the-power-on

Tip: The brush bar will never rotate when the machine is standing upright, so make sure you recline it down into the normal vacuuming position before testing it.

If you're confident the brush control is set correctly, but the brush bar still won't rotate when the vacuum is reclined, please get in touch directly so we can help further. You can reach our experts by calling 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), or 1-877-397-6622 (CA).

Best wishes,

Jack

Why does my Dyson animal DC14 make that horrible screeching noise and how can I stop it? Please!!!! Thank you.

I can't probably help you but I can tell you what Dyson told me. I have this same vacuum and it just started making that same noise. When I called their rep they had me take off the bottom plastic piece (comes off real easy by taking a coin and turning the three circles). Check to make sure the belt isn't broke. Then, they had me pull toward me the roller brush and turn it to get it seperated from the belt. Then, take off the belt. On mine, the spindle was full of dog hair clogging it. I took twizers and narrow pliers and pulled everything off. Then put it back together. It worked fine for the next few times I vacuumed then it started again. So, I did the same thing again and found this spindle covered with the hair again. Cleaned it, put it back together and it worked again. Today, while vacuuming I picked up a piece of string and that noised started again. Turned it over and saw that string on that spindle. Took it off, cleaned it and it worked again then started the screeching again. So, tomorrow I am calling a vacuum repair place. IF you have the same vacuum (which you do) it should still be under warranty. Dyson told me I would have nothing to pay unless I abused the vacuum which I did not. Hopefully I am not without it very long...I have two golden retrievers who do shed alot.

My Dyson DC 14 is making the horrible "ratcheting"sound only when the brush is engaged on the carpet setting. I have cleaned the brush, so there are no obstructions, the canister is empty and...

Something is causing the brush to slow down, either it is full of hair or debris or the brush itself is wearing out and may need changed. The noise you are hearing is the motor protector keeping it from burning up becuse there is some type of drag on the brush. If there is no issues with the brush then I would suspect the clutch assembly is worn and needs replaced. Here is a diagram for you to look at and go from there.

How do you get the beater brush to start rotating, the dyson was just cleaned and the beater brush won't rotate

Sounds like the rubber drive band has not been replaced properly to drive the brush and/or the brush was not properly cleaned. You can find the manual here:

I believe the clutch on my dyson "animal" is stuck. It makes this horrible noise when you try to lower the brush roll to vacuum.

Hi its Darran at Dyson.

Your machine is designed to make this ratchet noise if the brush bar is obstructed. We would recommend checking the brush bar and soleplate area and removing any blockages or hairs/threads that are wrapped around the brush bar.

Full details on these checks can be found in our Support section online at www.dyson.com.

Kind regards

How do we fix roller brush on dyson dc14 full gear?

Have you also checked that the brush control knob is set to "carpet"? The brush will not spin in "bare floor" mode. (Sorry if this seems too obvious to mention, but I see lots of Dysons where incorrect setting of that knob is the only problem.) Failing that, you almost certainly need a new drive belt.

I replaced the clutch in the dyson dc14. it isnt making that terrible noise anymore....thank god!! but the roller brush is not moving when the vacuum is in use. whats wrong?

The "horrible noise" you were hearing before wasn't the clutch! It was the roller brush. If the brush is not turning, all you are doing is burning out your new clutch. Reasons for the brush not turning: there is hair, carpet fiber or other matter wrapped around the brush that needs to be removed. Remove the roller brush, inspect it, and remove anything that could interfer with it's functioning. Reinstall and give it a test.

But in my experience, the brush needs to be replaced. Remove the brush and look for cracks in the plastic, If you see any, it needs replacing. eBay, via a distributor from England, is your best bet as far replacing the brush. Be careful of non-original brushes as they will break easily and are not of the same quality as the originals. Try searching for "DC14 brushroll" and then go down to the International Sellers at the bottom of the page.

Do not continue using the vac until you have solved the problem. You will only have to replace the clutch again.
