Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

My computer monitor has somehow turned its brightness all the way down, possibly due to me choosing a new screensaver which was already installed on my computer. Sadly, my monitor, an Emprex LM-1704 requires access to the screen to change the brightness, but everything is far too dark on there to see anything, let alone the brightness options.

Find yourself a dark room or wait for the night to come. The darkest monitor adjustment could somehow reveal some light when there are no other light source available.

You may also hook a conventional CRT monitor and make your changes (such as bringing your computer back to its original settings). The darkest adjustment in CRT monitor could still render discernible displays.

My monitor comes up during start up but after 60 seconds or so it goes into sleep mode? and the monitor goes black

You might have it connected using the wrong port on the back of your computer. The monitor will display the BIOS and post messages but once it gets to windows it will turn off. The other possibility is you need to either reload the driver for your video card, change the default display device in the bios, or replace your video card.

My monitor shuts down after one second.

Dell monitors automatically go into power-save mode after a preset amount of time when the computer is inactive. The Dell monitor will go completely black, instead of showing a screensaver. This doesn't mean that your Dell computermag-glass_10x10.gif has shut down. Instead, this allows your monitor to essentially turn off until it's needed again. You can change how long it is before the Dell monitor goes into power-save mode by changing your display settings.
  1. Step 1 Press any key on your keyboard or move your mouse. Either will turn off power-save mode. Alternately, you can press the power button on your Dell computer tower or laptop.
  2. Step 2 Press any key a second time if the monitor goes from power-save to stand-by mode. Stand-by mode allows the screensaver to appear.
  3. Step 3 Enter your user name and password into the login prompt if your computer requires a login. Press "Enter" to begin using your Dell computer.
  4. Step 4 Change the display settings on your Dell monitor to prevent your monitor from going into power-save mode prematurely. Right-click anywhere on your desktop and choose "Properties." Click the "Screensaver" tab and press "Power." Beside "Turn off Monitor," choose a time amount from the drop-down list and press "Apply."

Assuming you are using Win-XP, go into control panel, Appearance and Themes and Choose a screensaver. There should be an option below the screensaver choice to adjust Power Saver settings.

Do you mean the screensaver? You can remove it by Rightclicking on the Desktop, and then click Properties. On the screensaver tab, Click on the drop-down and choose None. Click Apply and then OK.

Hope this helps.

My Sony Moniter suddenly turned to a bright yellow

If the display looks normal other than being yellow, it's missing blue.

This may be because of a bad cable. Sometimes the wires inside break from flexing. Try wiggling the cable (as mikeslab suggested) at the end where it connects to the computer. Also check the plug for bent pins.

It's more likely the monitor has lost blue due to solder connections to the blue output transistor or transistor failure, or that the picture tube itself has gone bad and the blue gun has quit. Tube failure is pretty rare. I've seen many cases of bad connections and transistors, though.

If the cable and plug aren't the cause, you can have a service shop check the monitor and give a repair estimate. But if this is a 17- or 19-inch monitor, you might just want to replace it. New LCD's are $150 or less. To repair yours would be around half that cost already, possibly more depending on labor and parts costs.

Monitor picture turns on its side when it goes to screensaver

Sounds like your screensaver is using a picture of your desktop in it's code intentionally.

Right click on a blank area of your desktop --> select properties

--> click screensaver --> change it to "none" or another screensaver

Monitor Shutoff Problem

Power management is a tricky business for a lot of users. I would recommend setting a screensaver up if you already have not and turning that part of Power Management off.

XP:
Right click on the desktop, select Properties, click the Screen Saver tab, set up your screensave. Then on that same tab, click the power button at the bottom, changet the turn off monitor setting to 'Never" click apply. Hopefully by never engaging the poower management, this will eliminate the error.
