    Hi s_honest,

Need some infromation about your computer.

    1. May I know the version of Windows you use? Is it XP or Vista?

If the operating system is XP, perform the below steps and let me know:

    a. Click start -> Select Run -> Type devmgmt.msc -> Click Ok.

    b. Click on the + sign next to the DVD/CD ROM devices and let me know the entries listed there.

If the operating system is Vista, perform the below steps and let me know:

    a. Hold the windows key and press 'R' -> Type devmgmt.msc -> Click Ok

    b. Click on the + sign next to the DVD/CD ROM devices and let me know the entries listed there.

From the above steps let me know the exact DVD/CD drive entry listed there, also check if you have any yellow exclamation mark on it.

    Thank you.

Firstly set a system restore point, just incase you make a mistake, then click start>run, then type regedit and press enter.
in the listing look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE_SYSTEM, current control set, control, then class.

Left click on the folder 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 and look for entries named lower filter or upper filters on the right hand side of the window.

If any are found, right click on them and select Delete.

Close regedit and restart pc, it should then re-appear

Win 98 in dos mode i get this message " no cd rom or msdex.exe is not loaded " when trying to acces game disk in cd rom

1) Does it say MSDEX.EXE or MSCDEX.EXE?

2) Have you ever used that CD successfully on that computer before? (DVD's don't work well in MS-DOS).

3) Verify its trying to run from the correct drive. D:, E:, etc...

That aside, I'd recommend a glance at the following support page. It sounds like your driver isn't supported or your game is referring to a specific drive that doesn't exist.

MSCDEX Help

(make a back-up copy your autoexec.bat, and rename it autoexec.bat.orig just in case)
Get an older compatible driver for your CD-Rom that is windows 98 compatible, so something around the year 2000 is probably ideal.
Uninstall your current driver and reboot. Scan for Hardware changes and install the new drivers for your CD-ROM. Then check your config.sys and verify the driver. If its not correct, open the autoexec.bat in an editor. in the portion of the autoexec.bat that has MSCDEX..exe program you'll put in the following. (replace DRIVERNAME with the driver name, typically MSCD001)

LH C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:DRIVERNAME

Save, reboot. Let me know how it goes!

Lost access to my DVD/CD ROM after updating Microsoft files. Running Vista on a Dell Inspiron 1721 laptop. Tried to delete low filter in Regedit but that filter does not exist.

you can try to searh for upperfilters in the registry and delete it. if it did not exist, kindly try to perform system restore on your computer as it is a way as well to restore the registry settings. ( restore your computer to an earlier time as the DVD/CD is still working )

I have an acer aspire 5520 and the dvd rom doesn't even show up on the hardware. I update all the driver and got a new dvd rom and still nothing. please help....

Removing the UpperFilters and LowerFilters registry values from the Windows Registry is a likely solution to several Device Manager error codes in Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP.

UpperFilters and LowerFilters values might exist for several device classes in the registry but those values in the DVD/CD-ROM Drives class tend to corrupt and cause problems most often.

Important: Changes to the registry are made in these steps. Take care in making only the changes outlined below. While it's not a necessary step to complete this process, I recommend that you play it safe by backing up the registry keys you're modifying.

You can follow the step by step text instructions here. If you prefer a screenshot step by step guide, you can click here.

Hope this information helps!

I have a HP Pavilion dv6910us laptop. My cd/dvd driver is missing. When I go to Device Manager there is no + cd/dvd-rom drive to click on. I have uninstalled itunes and deleted upper and lower filters with...

If you don't see it in the device driver, then it doesn't exist.

Go to the HP website and search for 'download drivers'... There will be a place where you can type in the driver you're looking for. Download and install. That should fix your problem.

This problem has nothing to do with itunes or filters.

Cant find dvd rom?

If you can't find the DVD ROM, try to click the start button, then click My Computer. Then try to find if the opticcal drive / DVD drive exist on it. If it is not, try other options..

You may uninstall it from the device manager by clicking Start > right click My Computer > then click Properties > then click Hardware > then click Device Manager. Under DVD/CD ROM drives, right click the device and Uninstall. Then restart the pc and go back to device manager. Then click Scan for hardware changes let it auto install the drivers. Check if it works....

In dvd rom probelm nor read the data or music only blank disk

Hi, this problem occurs if yours DVD ROmis old or used most often, to sovle this you have one solution i.e open the DVD Rom clean the LENS with a IPA (ISO Propyle Alcholol) but remeber to clean with the help of a soft cloth & close it immediately after closing the DVD rom check the CD's /Dvd's.
More often if this not helps you'll have to change the DVD rom as it costs only 1000/- INR approx.

CD DVD Rom not found

If your drive is showing in the BIOS and you are able to boot from it using a bootable disc then the following should resolve the problem:

Always backup your registry before editing and use care to find exact key!
Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click)

Find "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" (and "UpperFilters.bak" "LowerFilters.bak", if they exist) value under the following key in the registry, and delete it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Quit Registry Editor.

Reboot.

NOTE: You might need to reinstall any CD recording apps you have, if they start to not work completely, after doing this.

Is the Drive detected in the BIOS? Can you boot from your Windows or any bootable disc? If so try this solution:

Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click)

Find "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" (and "UpperFilters.bak" "LowerFilters.bak", if they exist) value under the following key in the registry, and delete it:
