I too have the same issue (PCG-R505EL). I took the machine apart and removed the fan housing. I then opened the fan housing and cleaned it thoroughly. This however did not yield the desired outcome. I did find that the part that spins (the fan itself) is held snug to the housing and shaft with magnets. My guess is, these magnets have lost the strength to hold the fan firmly in place as it rotates. I think the noise comes from the motors shaft is spinning faster than fan. Thus, the noise is a result of the magnets weakening over time as magnets do. I see three options here: 1. Replace the magnets (good luck finding those). 2. Buy a used replacement for the fan (risky because you do not know the condition of the magnets). 3. Buy a new laptop (this hurts, as I love my notebook). Anyhow, this is what I believe to be the problem. If someone else knows more please feel free to jump on in.

Note: You can use power panel to adjust fan settings for each profile. However, this compromises CPU performance by regulating CPU speed to prevent overheating.

I too removed the fan from the housing and cleaned the fan shaft with a Qtip. Then I cleaned the magnets.
THEN I used a really light bike chain lube called Prolink to lightly lube the magnets and the fan shaft.

The thinness of the lube ensures that it won't gum up the fan shaft and if the shaft does make contact with the housing it won't make quite so much noise.

Three days now and the difference from "grinding chrun" to whirring fan is noticeable.

Loud fan belt type noise from laptop

There are no belts in a computer, sounds like something is rubbing in your computer cooling fan blades, get a can of Duster ( to clean dust from things) and spray the compressed air into all the vent holes to clean out any dust and debris.

Sony pcg-k33 fan is making noises i took comp apart and cleaned fans with brush but noises still exists and are loud and squeeky

that's the actual fan, brushes may need some fresh oil (like wd40), means opening the lappy back up and removing the fan and dropping some oil inside the fan bearing area (where the fan and hub connect)
this should stop the sounds and help the fan move freely.
though this is also a sign that the fan is unhealthy and will eventually need replaced.
hope this helps.

Only do this if you feel competent in doing so.

Pulling apart laptops is not for the faint of heart.

If you really must do it there are some
good guides here.

An alternative is to get a can of compressed air used to clean computers. Put the nozzle on and spray it in every hole you can see without putting the nozzle itself inside the laptop.

Do this outside with glasses on.

You may also want to remove the hard drive and ROM drive.

Take a
peek here for more ideas of what is involved.

There are a few are tips for various things in there.

DON'T touch the CPU cooler unless you know what you are doing and have some thermal grease for CPUs to hand.

To make newer laptops last longer between cleaning a good 3 fan cooling pad is suggested.

Never use a laptop on soft surfaces as the ventilation can act as a mini vacuum cleaner and encourage dirt build up.

Soft surfaces also block the vents causing fans to run more and burn out sooner.

Hope this gives you the information you need

Cpu fan malfunction

Hello Chris....i highly recommend you dont "pry" on anything and it have it serviced by a qualified tech. The vaio incorporates the heatsink and fan as a unit, It's a 2 wire fan that is temp. controled from 5v and up. You can take a vacuum and place at the ventilation opening and remove some of the dirt & dust that has accumulated inside, this will help. The cost is around 100 buxs for a new fan & sink...Sony part # 1-763-483-12. Attached is a pic of the unit..; Also note: a depleted battery will effect fan operation as well.
Hope this helps and will fixya up....
