After months of dealing with this problem all I can say is "What a blinking drive!!!" The WDMyBlackhole. BUT...it has great storage capacity. Actually, I am just deciding on the slogan for our new WD promotion. After the trouble many of our customers have been having, we want to create a new image for our much maligned mate - the MyBook. Vote today for your favorite solution. Choices are as follows:

    a) WDMyBlink Ultimate - 500GB of blinking drive

    (also available in 1TB blue)

    b) The new and improved WDMyBleep - people are talking.

    c) The New, Bigger, Badder WDMyBlackhole - it will **** you in.

    d) WDMyBinky - 500GB of sucking in every package

    e) WDMyBlinky - Cycloptic blinking eye now includes 500GB of free inaccesible storage!

    f) WDMyBook - Now you can fill your bookshelves with another book you'll never read.

    g) WDMyBook 500GB* (* - use of GB is in no way intended to imply "gigabytes" or that the product may or may not contain any other form of readable storage. GB are the initials of our founder and product engineer, George Burns. Any smoking is an intended feature.)

    h) WD MyBlackhole - It Sucks.

Thank you for you honest input. Vote today!

Any other options? How can I retrieve/save (hopefully) the information on my external drive? I called Western Digital and they said it was my power supply so they sold me a new one-- same problem. I'm furious and I cannot lose this information. marklegault@hotmail.com

Seems perfectly normal, the slow blink while sleeping shows you that it is active but not in use (witched off but immediately available) The rapid blinking is the machine accessing the disk and the constant light means it has power but not connected. The occasional blink is probably the HDD parking the reading head or shutting down the disk or both.
Nothing to worry about.

If you look at the Power supply box there should be a green light. If you unplug the cord and plug it in again it might just blink then stay our.. it is a common problem with these WD Elements. If it is newer, then it is under warranty.

If not they will sell you another one.

A replacement or extra power supply for your external drive can be purchased from our phone support team by calling 1-800-275-4932. Any technical support representative will be able to sell this part. Please have the serial number or model number of the hard drive ready, as this is needed to determine the correct adaptor type for the hard drive.

I have a WD external hard drive USB 2.0 750 GB. It was working just fine for many months, and suddenly, my laptop won't "read" it -- it's not listed/detected in "my computer." I thought there was something...

If the device is recognized and not listed as a driver in the Explorer, then the disk is not recognized as having been partitioned and formatted. You can use the Disk Manager to see if there is anything listed on the disk.
Start - > right-click My Computer -> Properties
In the management console, go to disk management and check your disks. The external disk should be there and then you can see the partitions and drives assigned to it.
If there is nothing on it, your MBR could be damaged, which needs to be restored.

Alternatively you could partition and format it, but then you'd loose the data on it, so that is a last resort.

I think a program called Acronis Disk Director Suite can restore MBR's. Have a look at this external hard disk troubleshooting article.

Help! the green light flashes then nothing happens

The exact same thing just happened to me (WD elements 500 gig) and it's only about 10 months old. I called the customer help line (on the official website) and after they asked me what the serial number of my HD was they were going to send me a new power supply. Simple as that. They said they'd be able to send it out early next week. I'm hoping that the HD didn't get fried and it's just the power supply but what you've described is EXACTLY what is happening to mine.
