Question about Tivoli Kloss Model One AM/FM Radio

2 Answers

I bought my Tivoli Model One about two years ago. Loved it. But past few months, FM tuning is really bad---hard to "zero in" on a station, plus very loud static as I move between stations. And, oddly, the numbers, like 92.5 of the station ID now don't seem to match what's pointed at on the dial. Can this be repaired? Do I need to buy another? Could it be related to a cell phone tower that was installed about 50 away from my garage, where the radio is?

Thanks, Ajin. Very complete answer, including the photo. Replacing the capacitor is beyond my capabilities or interest. Thanks to you, I now know to just donate the radio to goodwill.

Hi,
There is a Gang capacitor behind the tunning knobe of your radio. If this gang capacitor is faulty it will make difficult to tune the station accuratly and also will make static when rotating the tuning knobe. You have to replace the Gang capacitor. To see the gang capacitor you have to oppen the radio. It will look like one the picture.

is the antenna , broken? or unplugged from rear of radio?

past 90.?
that is FM. and FM must have an antenna to work
or are you saying the button fails to advance the stations.
if yes, that is a bad radio.

Can't seem to tune many stations at all. Also once a station is tunned it "slips".

The antenna works with the power cord. Try extending the length of its power cord with an extension cord.
Position of the radio in the room, the furniture in the room and your position in relation to the radio all affect its reception.
If there is a place to connect an external antenna, this will be helpful. Check with Radio shack and best buy for a FM loop antenna. Usually the wire is flat.
An inexpensive antenna for FM only is also a cheap alternative

Many such problems are caused by bad aerial connections, aerial cable problems and the aerial itself. Make certain all of these are good before checking out the electronics.

Becker in the past has worked with two methods: 1) Select station, pull the button out (pull, not yank) and press it back in, or, 2) Tune station, press the button in for 5 sec. Depending on the model, when you switch between am and fm , the same button stores also the station in the alternate band.

You most likely have a bad filter capacitor. i assume you run this radio on ac power.
the cap is the largest one inside the radio be sure to put the same values back mf and dc volts.
