I have the same problem and I am looking for a solution also. I stopped using the printer for some time and then purchased some refurbished cartridges and hooked it back up. Prior to this I never had a problem except for paper not feeding correctly from the top feeder. Anyway the way I was able to get around this was to send a fax, once the fax was completed the printer was ready. Of course someone turns it off etc I am back to the problem on start up. The fax trick no longer works for me but might work for someone else. If anyone has the solution please post it.

This is a firmware issue with this printer model, and is fairly common. Try the following: remove both of the print cartridges, close the lid, wait for any noises to stop, and pull the power plug out of the back of the printer while it is still on. Wait at least 10 minutes with the cord disconnected. Plug the power back into the printer, wait for the noises to stop, and then reinstall the cartridges, black first (very important), and then the color. This will force the printer to reload its ram memory and should take care of the glitch. Let me know if you need further assistance, as I would like to be sure your problem is fixed.
There is something wrong with the electronics on your cartridge. Sounds like wherever you got it refilled didn't electronically test the cartridge to make sure it would function in your printer. You need to return the refilled cartridge either for your money back or a new refill.
the printer scan whatever been placed for it, so if you place a color it will read color and so on…now the printer read that the b lack cartridge is wrong according to your investigations, then the issue is between the ink cartridge and the printer scanner, so take out the black ink cartridge and do the followings, remove any type of materials that may cover the ink tank and make sure that he vent hole is clear, put the ink back after doing the same to the color and cleaning the inside housing, then use the software for self cleaning and alignment..
