I have Heroes of Might and Magic 5 Running on Win 7. There were many patches to install before this title worked(on my computer). Have you installed all the available updates for it?
Here are 2 sites that have the compatibility options: http://techpaul.wordpress.com/2009/06/28/compatibility-tricks-for-old-programs-new-machines/ http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/316-compatibility-mode.html
If that does not work, you can also try to set up XP mode in Win 7: (Note: you need to have Win 7 Pro, Enterprise, or Ultimate for this one) Win 7 Home Premium does not support XP Mode. http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/reviews/2010/01/windows-xp-mode.ars/
make sure your printer printed an initialisation or alignment sheet once you installed the new cartridge. you can try a partial reset of the printer and check if the printer prints fine, also there is an option of cartridge calibration in the printer properties or the printer software installed in your computer
How did you install the printer?
I have found that if you just let your computer recognise new hardware, it really has a hard time with the USB printing to the 1700's.
Originally there was a disk that came with the 1700 printer. You do want to use that.
During the install, you run the software, and then turn on the printer. (You can have the printer on during the install, but ignore the Windows Wizards that come up).
If you don't have the original 1700 install disk, you can download it from Dell.
The problem is with USB port configuration. These little 1700's are just a pain sometimes if not installed the way they were originally designed.
FIRST TRY TO CANCEL ALL THE PENDING DOCUMENTS WHICH YOU HAVE GIVEN BEFORE THEN TRY TO PRINT IF THIS DOES NOT WORK THEN TRY OTHER OPTION GIVEN BELOW.
CHANGE THE USB WIRE (THE CONNECTION BETWEEN PRINTER AND YOUR PC )IF IT IS TOO OLD.
THERE MAY BE THE PROBLEM WITH USB DRIVERS IN UR PC .
TO RECTIFY --- RIGHT CLICK THE MY COMPUTER ICON
CLICK PROPERTIES AND THEN CLICK HARDWARE N GO TO DEVICE MANAGER
UNINSTALL ALL USB PORTS AND THEN SCAN FOR HARD WARE CHANGES
UR PC WILL DETECT UR PRINTER N ASK FOR PRINTER DRIVERS
RELOAD DRIVERS N UR PC WILL COMMNICATE WITH UR PRINTER.
FOR FURTHER ASSISTANCE FEEL FREE TO ASK AND WISH U SUCCESS -BYE.
please do not connect your usb wire before you install the driver cd connect it when the message comes on the screen "now connect your usb wire to the printer" it will now automatically detecet your printer.

Whenever I have seen this problem it has usually turned out to be one of the solder points on the USB connection in the printer. Of course it could be a logic board problem as well. Well done for testing your problem so thoroughly (eg trying different cables and machines) but I think it needs a repair agent now unless it is under warranty (or you can solder well). Mind you it's probably cheaper to purchase a new one then to pay to have it repaired.
have you tried to uninstall the vedio driver and reinstall it then let me know.go to my computer icon right click it > go to properties >hardware tab > device manager and check if there is any yellow mark showing.kindly do this in starting your computer in safe mode.
Ok Guys! I found the solution to the nasty "Problem communicating with the printer" AT LAAAST !
I have a lexmark 2480 and I recently upgraded to windows 7 ( I had the same problem with Vista earlier as well) so this problem has nothing to do with your operating system. The mistake I was making was that I first connected the cable and then began installing the setup.exe file. I never got the printer to work after that though strangely the scanner seems to work. I even enabled bidirectional port but it was no help. I tried unchecking the check box that said "save power...." in the usb port device I accessed using the device manger. No. Nothing works.
Finally I found the answer. I uninstalled lemxark. I disabled the firewall. Then Disconnected the cable. Guys this is important you have to disconnect the cable and then only hit setup.exe. You must connect the cable only when the setup asks you to. And it works. I used the setup in my CD which I got when I bought the printer. Despite the fact that my OS is windows 7, 64 bit all works fine!
take care, hope this helps people like me who had to tear my hair apart for 3 hours+.
