If you know how to get to the device manager you will see that the camera is there but it might need a software driver.
My experience with laptops, windows and cameras is that the unit it is recognized and made available for any program.

There is the possibility the camera is bad.

The best way to download pictures and videos from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures and videos from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo/video cataloging program.

Hard to tell which of the 3 possible webcams you have in your laptop, but here are links to webcam apps for all 3 that are possible in your laptop. Recommend you try them one at a time and see if Windows sees the device. If not then try the next one:

If you are using Windows xp , also download the UVC driver update from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta … laylang=en.

It is possible that USB post in camera got broken/ defective.
Easiest way is to take out memory stick from camera and put in to memory card reader and transfer pictures in laptop or PC.
