Question about Epson Perfection V700 PHOTO Flatbed Scanner

I cannot get clear scans from my photo negatives

When I scan my photo negatives from a medium and large format camera, I am not getting clean scans from my Epson V700 photo scanner. I have changed the file sizes for the professional photo lab to work with as they recommended, but we are still seeing pixelation on the prints once they have been printed.
When I purchased this photo scanner, I was told it would provide good quality scans but since attempting to do the scans myself, we have experienced fair to poor results. Very disappointing.
I have tried taking the negatives out of the holding frames in an attempt to get a clearer and cleaner scan on the glass since it offers a flater surface but have not been successful.
The techs at the photo lab I use are very knowledgeable and are wondering if there is some way to adjust the focus on the scanner. Per their guidelines, I have scanned the negatives in a Tiff file and have increased the MB sizes of the files. Still unsuccessful.
My understanding was this was a "higher-end" photo scanner able to provide good quality photo scans at an affordable price. I realize to get the highest quality I would have to invest in a far more expensive scanner. I didn't have the funds to purchase one of those, however, was assured by Epson's sales department that this scanner was quite capable of meeting my needs.
Do you have any additional suggestions that I might try? Do I have a faulty scanner? Is there a way to adjust the focus on this particular scanner?
I would really appreciate any feedback you might offer.

    Scan are not clear. I scanned a lot of photographs a few months ago and all worked perfectly, but now, all the negatives I scan are trouble. I tried to change all the plastic parts from the guides(from + to 0, and then putting them off) but it still doesn't work.

If you are seeing pixelation, the issue is either insufficient resolution during the scanning process or a problem with the output device. If it's a focus issue, which will NOT cause pixelation, the problem may be the height of the negative holder. The Epson Perfection V series scanners have a fixed focus point which only adjusts between two settings depending on whether you select the film holders (which raise the film off the glass) or the film guide (which scans film directly on the glass) in the software options. If you are going to scan transparencies or negatives, familiarize yourself with the holder height adjustment issue and be willing to experiment with different height settings until you are getting optimum results. This is not documented much at all in the Epson user manual but there is a little bit about it, including some examples of results at different settings, here: http://www.photo-i.co.uk/Reviews/interactive/Epson%20V700/page_13.htm Apparently every scanner is slightly different so even though the lowest holder foot setting (default) is working best for some, other settings work better for others. On my V700, I have the feet on the film holders set to the highest setting plus I shimmed them with a 1mm piece of styrene before I could get the scans in focus. Once I found the right height though, I've been able to get beautiful scans from this machine. BTW, scanning negs directly on the glass will almost always result in Newton Rings.

How can I find out if there are digital scanners available for 2.25 square negatives.


Given the popularity of these films (Kodak 120 or 620, dependent upon size of hole in the spool) there are scanners available.

However, the negative is large enough that ordinary flat-bed scanners with a film attachment will be sufficient for scanning.

Cannot take so much pictures. what is a memory stick. is it different from memory card?


A memory stick generally refers to a USB device that you use to transfer digital media from one device to another. Your camera would utilize a memory card - depending on your camera this could be a CF card (bigger almost square) or a SD card (looks like a SIM card.

As to the number of pictures you can take: This depends on a number of things - 1) Internal memory of the Camera 2) Size of your memory card 3) Settings you shoot with.

Depending on the camera you have you can set the quality and type of format - format could be your camera's raw capability which is usually the largest size to save an image in or it could be set to JPEG (here you normally have settings like Fine, Medium and High or Small, Medium, Large) some cameras only offer JPEG output and will only show you the option to set it on small, medium or large.

Smaller size = More photos, but keep in mind that this affects what you can do with the photo. If you want to use it for the Web or mobile then small is no problem, if you want to print the photo then a medium (preferably large) setting should be used.

The best is to have multiple cards and then you can continue shooting even if you are not at a place where you can download what you have already.

When I scan 35mm negatives, the pixel aspect ratio is incorrect: the resulting images are stretched out by twice their width without any change in height. I can fix this after importing the image into...


I have the same problem with mine; medium format scans are fine but 35mm scans are stretched. The same happens with both the Minolta software and with Vuescan. Has anyone manage to fix this?

I need a scanner that will scan 10X14 pictures


Hi,
I found some scanners for you listed below but,
You can also scan large pictures in sections, and then use a program like STITCHES. Basically you scan it in quarter sections and then create a working board in your photo program and then you copy and paste each section into that board and line up the edges.
This is what most people do rather than buy a very expensive large format scanner.

Some large companies also have large scanners for maps etc. If you know someone who works for a very large company or one that does surveying etc. They may do this favor for you.
Though copy stores may have the size you need, copywrite issues will be asked about.

Scanning Medium Format negatives


The lamp on the scanner (Cano Scan D1250U2F) is too small for medium format negatives.

Scan images file size seems very large


That entirely depends on your scan settings. The resolution has a huge impact on file size - doubling the resolution from, say. 150dpi to 300dpi actually quadruples your file size. That being said, your scans are probably saved as BMPs. If you scan to Paint or a proprietary image editor (like Photoshop), then you can save in a compressed format like JPG or PNG and reduce the file size some more.

Bottom line - if you're scanning a full size (8.5x11) page, then less than 2MB per page is pretty decent, especially if the file is a BMP. If these are 4x6 photos, then it's still not bad if you're using a resolution like 300dpi. My digital camera takes photos at 5megapixels and the files are often 1-2MB each, and those are just photos.

Please do the following to scan slides or negatives in manual mode of the Epson TWAIN:
For scanning transparencies in HOME mode - for EPSON SCAN models, not Epson Twain/Manual mode models.
1) In the program you are working from, begin the scanning process. If working in FULL AUTO MODE as the scan begins click PAUSE or CANCEL, then change "Full Auto Mode" to "Home Mode".
2) You will now see all Epson Scan settings displayed. If the scanner has not previewed automatically, click the large preview button to get a visual of what is on the scanner.
3) Ensure the settings on the Epson Scan are correct for what you wish to scan. For example, the DOCUMENT TYPE for transparencies must be either "Color negative film", "B&W Negative Film" or "Positive film"*.
* FILM here indicates that the item being scanned is transparent to light; this setting is also used for slide scanning. Positive indicates that the image is in true colors (ie the grass is green and sky is blue), whereas negative indicates reversed colors, as produced in some photo finishing processes.)
If the DOCUMENT SOURCE is set for a flatbed related option, ie PHOTO, the scanner is looking for reflective items and will not activate the backlight in the transparency unit. If the DOCUMENT TYPES for "FILM" are greyed out or cannot be selected, close the Epson Scan, reseat the power/communication cable connecting the base of the scanner to the transparency unit, then reopen Epson Scan and try again.
NOTE for PROFESSIONAL MODE users: DOCUMENT TYPE should read TRANSPARENCY for film scans.
4) Ensure the other scanner settings are correct for the type of scan you are doing. For example:
IMAGE TYPE should be color photo for all positive or negative color transparencies, or BLACK AND WHITE PHOTO for monochrome transparencies.
DESTINATION is unimportant, however you should select a RESOLUTION appropriate to what you plan to do with the scans. (There are no hard and fast rules for DPI. As a general guideline, if you are saving scans at original size, a resolution ranging from 400-600 DPI should capture enough information to faithfully record the image. If the slide or negative will be enlarged, you will need to increase this DPI accordingly. We have no means to calculate what your exact needs will be in this situation; you will need to experiment and view the output to gauge the appropriate input DPI from the scanner.)
PREVIEW. If your scanner is doing a THUMBNAIL PREVIEW, the slides will automatically preview and appear in boxes on the left side. Here, you can select or deselect the slides you wish to scan.

Epson 3490 does not find the slide I put in the correctly positioned provided frame
