Question about Maytag MAH6700AWW Neptune Front-Load Washer

My Maytag washer is overflowing

After 8 years without a problem, our MAH4000 front loader - set to COLD/COLD wash/rinse - filled with very warm water and overflowed. The machine also shut itself off as it entered the first rinse cycle.

I know the machine has a thermistor to regulate water temperature via water solenoid valves, and a water level switch to control and stop water flow into the tub. Can you help me understand how these control features are related to produce the observed problem(s)? Thanks!

I need more help. I don't want to buy new parts until I'm sure I fully understand the problem. What would cause the washer to overfill with water at a temperature not selected?

  • dncolbert Sep 09, 2008

What am I checking the inlet valve for? How do I confirm its a failed part?

  • dncolbert Sep 09, 2008

Can confirm that inlet valves are not stuck. If the thermostat ( thermistor?) is faulty, will the water valve unit continue to pass water in an attempt to regulate the tempeature, causing the water to overflow in the tub? In other words, will the thermostat control override the water level switch?

  • dncolbert Sep 09, 2008

That didn't answer my question. Still not sure I have the problem understood.

If it does not stop filling it can be a stuck inlet valve, or a faulty water level switch.

    See here from Repairclinic:

"if your washer is overfilling, check these:

    Water-inlet valve
    Water-level switch

    Water-inlet valve

    A
defect in the water-inlet valve may mean that it's no longer able to
shut off completely when the electricity has been turned off to it. If
this occurs, the valve may leak and drip water into the clothes tub. In
time, the water may accumulate substantially. If this happens, you need
    to replace the valve.

    Water-level switch

    A
defect--or an obstruction--in the water-level switch may mean that it
can't tell the water to shut off. So the machine overflows. This switch
senses the water level in the clothes tub. It's usually a diaphragm
device with a small, clear tube attached between the switch and the
bottom of the washer's outer tub. As the water level in the tub
increases, the pressure on the air in the tube increases. When the
pressure reaches a certain level, it activates the switch, shuts off
the water, and signals the timer to begin the agitate cycle. You can
either clear any obstruction in the tube or replace the water-level
    switch."

Here you foind all parts and exploded views for your appliance.

If you need to call a technician you can phone the number listed on the owner manual.

It is not the termistor, it is probably the inlet valve , that is stuck and does not stop the flow of hot water.
Here is a general diagram for a Maytag front load, move the mouse on the picture and find the inlet valve, at the back, that is probably faulty.

What regulates the flow of water coming into the machine is the water inlet valve, what happens on your machine is that when the inlet valve opens to pump in hot water, it get stuck and overfills.
If you do not want to do it yourself check the owner manual and call the service number printed on the owner manual.
The technician will test the solenoid that activates the valve and the valve itself, that is probably faulty.

If you want to do it yourself, instead see here

In brief, he only way to be sure it is the inlet valve is by testing the solenoids that activate the valve, get a Multimeter and follow instructions here to test the valve.

Cold water won't stop before rinse cycle

if it fails to stop running only at the rinse part of the cycle it is probably in the timer as the solenoid valve has to cut the water off when the washer fills for the wash cycle too. fills for wash cycle and cuts off water, washes and drains, refills for rinse cycle and water just keeps running? does this every time you run it? that's in the timer. bad solenoid (water inlet valve) would keep running even on wash fill up. hope this helps.

EW1200 is rinsing in hot water how do we change that

Hot wash, hot rinse is for 'whites'. Cold wash, cold rinse is for 'colors'. Warm wash, cold or warm rinse is for 'permanent press'. Check your settings to see if you have these options. Double check the hoses, put the machine on cold fill and feel the hoses.
Has someone worked on the machine and possibly put the wires on the solenoids wrong? Easy mistake to make.

Cold water will not stop filling during rinse

while the unit is filling in the warm cycle. reach behind and shut off the hot water tap.I bet the water flow stops filling, if so, you would need to change the inlet valve on the machine. You see, in warm, if the cold is not filling, you still hear the hot filling and the unit will advance. The rinse cycles are mostly "cold" only. if the valve is not opening it will not allow it to advance from the rinse section on the board.

Good luck!

Maytag washer

It sounds like you have the hot and cold water lines to the washer reversed.  Try turning off the tap for the hot water then setting the washer to just cold wash and then  hot washif you get nothing on the cold and cold water when set to hot they are probably reversed.  Typically if the auto-temp control is broken you will only get hot or cold coming out on any setting.
