Question about Toshiba SD-3990 DVD Player

1 Answer

Display says "no"

I have just been given this model from a neighbour. All instructions are in French. The DVD has never been used. Once the disk is in - it displays "no". Is this the same as "no disk". If this is the case I would think there is a mechanical problem. She thought it may have something to do with the parental setup. Hope you can help. Thanks!

I had the same problem with the unit displaying the word "no."

Take the cover off and disconnect the two ribbon wires on the PC board, then reconnect them. It's a peice of cake.

Put the first disk in that will say operating System.
Turn the computer on and immediately keep tapping F12. This will show a boot menu. Select the CD/DVD Drive.
If prompted 'Press and key to boot from CD/DVD...' press any key.
This will load into the recovery disk follow the on screen instructions to recover the computer.

When I turn on the computer it takes a while to boot up, and when it does it stays idle for 10 seconds or so then shuts off?

Sounds like there may be a problem with your OS X.
You will need to boot from your OS X DVD and run your Disk Utility to do a repair on your operating system.
To do this, start your iMac and pop in your DVD. Once you hear the boot up sound, hold the Option/Alt key. You will be given the option to choose between your hard drive boot up and DVD boot up, so choose the DVD. It'll take a while longer to load than usual as you're booting from a DVD, but once your Mac has booted up, use Spotlight (Apple + Space, type "Disk Utility") to load up your Disk Utility program. Once you've got that open, select your hard drive on the left and click "Repair Disk Permissions" and then click "Repair Disk."
Once you're done, reboot and your Mac should be working good as new.

Disc Error

Try to clean the read laser and the laser pickup, by using a DVD cleaning disk. If this does not work you may have a misaligned laser or pickup.

That may sound like a canned response and it is, however it is a good start. I would also check the format of the video on the DVD-RW, and make sure the DVD player is set to display that format.  Also might I suggest that you try the documented Disk loading instructions. I know that sounds stupid, but I was working on a customers DVD player one day and I downloaded the manual, and I was shocked to find out that I was not following the recommended loading procedure, once I did that all of the disks worked (stupid? yes, but that's how things are now).
As I said try to clean the pick-up and laser, check the format of the DVDs, and then follow the recommended loading instructions.

I hope this helps
Thank you,
