I read my instructions that came with this printer and they only say to buy a usb cable but don't indicate a certain size or brand....nuttin! I also don't understand about connecting via ethernet or usb directly to computer. I only want to hook it up to my personal laptop computer, nothing else. I'm not connected to other computers, etc. Any idea what kind of usb cable I need to buy or any other suggestions that might make setting up the printer easier. I'm a "duh" kind of person and feel a bit intimidated when it comes to working with electronic devices.

Many issues are caused when the HP Photosmart is connected to computer using a USB cable before the HP Photosmart software is installed on the computer. IF you connected the HP Photo smart to your computer before the software installation screen prompts you to do so, you must follow these steps.
Troubleshooting common setup issues :

2) Uninstall the software (if you have already installed it.)
3) Restart you computer.
4) Turn off the HP Photosmartm wait one minute then turn it on.
5) Reinstall the HP Photosmart software.
If your installation is incomplete, or if you connected the USB cable to the computer before prompted by the software installation screen, you might need to uninstall and reinstall the software. It sounds like your printer is not in sync with your wireless router. Try restarting your computer, then make sure you have Internet access. (Click on Explorer or Firefox, and if you get access, then you know your router is working) If your router isn't working, unplug the router for 10 or 15 seconds, then plug it back in. Then restart your computer again. That should work. Once you are sure your router is working, you'll need to make sure your printer is in sync with your router. Best bet is to follow the instructions that came with your printer. You might have to put in the CD that came with the printer and reload the Photosmart programs. At one point during that process, it will ask you what type of router you have, and it will make a connection to the router, allowing you to print stuff without using a USB cable. (I had to go through this process three times, for three different laptops in my house, and - knock on wood - we've been having great success with wireless printing with our Photosmart printer.)
