Usb now it says usb device not recognized  one of the usb devices attached tp computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recongize it

    now I am only trying to use the printer and the error of malfunction still comes up.  any other ideas

    It was a portable flash drive Ativa.  This all happened after I inserted this.  Now none of the usb ports work.  All I want to do is use my printer now.  I did everything that you suggested.  I don't care about the portable usb drive.  All I want is so I could use my printer

Ok, try the device in another computer, if the same error comes up in another computer or more, you most likely have a faulty usb device or a loose connection. is this a usb memory or?

    Unplug all usb devices, turn of the computer, unplug the power cable wait 10 minutes, turn it back on and try again. that will resolve any electrical issue in the ports.

    Could you possibly try these printers in another computer to see if they are both fine that would make it clear if the issue is in your computer only.

Method 1: Initiate recognition of the USB device by using Device Manager loadTOCNode(2, 'workaround'); To initiate recognition of the USB device by using Device Manager, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type Devmgmt.msc, and then click OK. The Device Manager window opens.
2. Click to select your computer as the location for the scan.
3. On the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes.

Windows XP recognizes the new device.
4. Close the Device Manager window.

If this method resolves the issue, you are finished.

If this method does not resolve the issue, go to method 2.
Method 2: Disable power management of the USB hub loadTOCNode(2, 'workaround'); Note If you perform the following procedure, you may also reduce the battery life on a portable computer.

Use this method if method 1 does not work. To disable power management of the USB hub, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type Devmgmt.msc, and then click OK. The Device Manager window opens.
2. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
3. Right-click a USB Root Hub in the list, and then click Properties. The USB Root Hub Properties dialog box is displayed.
4. Click the Power Management tab.
5. Click to clear the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power check box, and then click OK.
6. Repeat steps 3 through 6 for each USB Root Hub in the list.

Uninstall all the usb controller from USB controller
and now restart the computer.

If this method does not resolve the issue, go to method 4 .
Method 3: Restart the computer loadTOCNode(2, 'workaround'); To initiate recognition of the USB device, first unplug the USB device and restart the computer. Then, wait five to ten seconds before you plug the USB device into the computer or hub. Windows XP recognizes the new device.

It appears your Usb drivers maybe corrupt, have you tried going into device manager and removing/re-installing them.
I trust you have the operating system disc? if not set a restore point and back up your files etc., first!

My 160GB Crossfire is not recognised when connected to any of the USB ports. It used to be, but then I've had some other PC issues recently that meant a forced closure of the PC and I'm concerned that...


When starting the external drive there is not much more than just plugging it in to a USB port and turning it on. The computer should recognize it ( showing something like the window shown here http://attachments.techguy.org/attachments/66120d1129787805/new-device-found2.jpg ) and it will show up in the My Computer area and a green arrow looking icon ( http://home.krb.nsw.edu.au/start/images/USB2.jpg ) When disconnecting an external drive the correct procedure is to left click the arrow in the system tray and select Safely Remove Mass Storage Device (X:) (whatever letter you device shows here)
You may want to test if another computer recognizes the device being plugged in to see if it is still functioning. You may want to also try plugging the device into a different USB port on your computer.

One of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfuctioned adn windows does not recognize it


Check out the Device manager: for which USB device its showing error, it will be flagged or question marked.

If you have all the devices attached to PC installed properly then this error will not come again.

Remove all the devices to check it out and let me know. So I can investigate further.

Having trouble installing HP Photosmart All in One Printer. Model C5280. Near the end of installation it ask's for printer to be connected via USB cable. Msg comes up on screen 'USB Device not recognized'...


Dear Sir:

It seems that the printer has gone bad because when you get this message 'USB Device not recognized' it means that the usb device connected to the computer is defective however I would suggest you to connect this device to another computer and if you are getting the same error with the other computer.

Please contact hp support they should be able to help you with this.

I plugged my Memorex TravelDrive into my computer. It has always worked perfectly. This time I got the message that the USB device was not recognized and I can't get into my files.

When you plug a USB device into a Windows XP-based computer immediately after the computer comes out of standby (S3) or hibernate (S4), the computer may not recognize the USB device. When this issue occurs, the USB device may be listed in Device Manager as an unknown device, and you may receive the following warning message:
Unrecognized device has been found.

This issue occurs because, when the computer comes out of S3 or S4, there is a five- to ten-second period when the selective suspend feature of the USB driver will interfere with detection of a new USB device connection. The time period depends on several factors. This includes the following factors:• Host controller hardware
• Attached hubs
• Attached devices
• USB driver versions
• Support for USB 2.0
• Additional system hardware or configurations that may change the timing
There may be other reasons that a USB device is not detected

Method 1
loadTOCNode(2, 'workaround'); After the computer comes out of S3 or S4, wait five to ten seconds before you plug the USB device into the computer or hub.

Method 2
After the computer comes out of S3 or S4, unplug the USB device, and then plug the device back into the computer or hub.

Method 3
Use the Device Manager to scan for new hardware. Follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, type Devmgmt.msc, and then click OK..
2. On the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes. This causes Windows to recognize new devices.
3. Close Device Manager and Control Panel.

Method 4
Disable power management of the USB hub.
Note If you perform the following procedure, you may also reduce the battery life on a portable computer.
To disable power management on the USB hub, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, type devmgmt.msc, and then click OK.

Try restarting the computer with the device in. Sometimes if you clear the memory that might help (stating the machine without memory then put it back and start it again).
