I had WMP open, Internet Explorer, and Outlook Express! However I restarted my PC and only tried WMP and the problem is still there! I have already shut down most programs that were running in the background!

This problem only started after I packed my computer, moved across town and hooked up my computer again! It was there and since then I had a Microsoft update to install service pack 3 which I have done!

  • mj2009 Sep 09, 2008

Okay I tried that but its still doing the same thing! Even when my computer starts up the welcome sound is choppy! Could it be the soundcard itself? ...it looks like the soundcard is also made onto the motherboard is that true in Dell computers or am I just not looking in the right place? ..

  • mj2009 Sep 09, 2008

Thank you so much for trying to help I also did that twice and that did not help either! Its a real puzzler and driving me nuts!!

  • mj2009 Sep 09, 2008

The soundcard is a SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio ....Driver Version 5.12.1.7000 .....Driver Date 3/22/2005

..... I uninstalled it from the device manager and reinstalled it with the discs that came with the computer as well as the one online using my service tag!

  • mj2009 Sep 09, 2008

Oh sorry for the confusion but It is an onboard sound!

  • mj2009 Sep 09, 2008

Okay, I have Windows Xp Service Pack 3... I already have Ad Aware and CCleaner so I will do all the steps you have suggested as well as defraging and disk cleanup... It could take awhile but right now I have 37 processes running and the CPU is ranging from 8% - 25% as the highest I have seen... I will get back to you on the number of items found!

Some more info not sure if its means anything but

    Processor

    Manufacturer
    Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.53GHz

    Clock Speed
    2.6GHz

  • mj2009 Sep 09, 2008

Okay I did all that! I ended up with 161 items in ccleaner and 34 items in adaware and I did a defrag and disc cleanup and the problem still exist! .. it is very frustrating and I am not sure what else to do that I have not done!

  • mj2009 Sep 09, 2008

Hey thanks Robert, take care of your family first though! I am in no hurry! Help when you are able too!! ... once again thanks!

  • mj2009 Sep 11, 2008

I have DJBCP Codec Pack & VP6 VFW Codec thats all I have installed! I have WMP10

  • mj2009 Sep 11, 2008

After looking through some properties on my device manager I found these other codec's Don't know if it means anything!

  • mj2009 Sep 11, 2008

Okay I have solved my problem! I did a system restore in safe mode to the last known date that my sound worked and that was a date before I moved! It was a success, my sound is working perfect! I am thinking that maybe one of the updates from Microsoft conflicted with the dell operating system! I could be wrong but the main thing is my sound is now perfect and I am very happy!

Robert (bunnydawg) you were a great help and your tips were very helpful! Thank you so much!!

I'm still thinking memory issues.... quick fix would be to unplug the memory module and then plug it in again.... it may have come unseated..... please make sure the power is off before you do that.

I've had choppy sound with laptops before but not desktops... be that as it may go to www.dell.com click on support and chose the model of your computer... download the sound driver and reinstall it.

ok i am embarrassed now.... didn't notice the reference to an add on sound card. what is the model number of the sound card. you may have to remove it to find the number unless you still have the box. it may also show up in device manager but i suspect it is the wrong driver.

I hate when i miss the obvious.

what operating system are you using ?

    vista by chance ?

Guess we need to start with basics to troubleshoot this so get out the coffee now. first download these programs. adaware, spybot s&d and ccleaner. google to find them.

Second go to start-my computer click on that... you will see your hard drive icon.... right click on that then click on disk cleanup..... after it has found all the files it can safely remove make sure there are check marks in all the boxes

click ok and let it do it's thing.

Next you need to defrag your computer....

after that install each of the programs you have downloaded

run adaware first.... make sure you update it before you run the scan.... remove all that it finds

next run spybot... update first then run a scan... remove all it finds.

    next run ccleaner

also i would like you to hit control alt delete at the same time.. no it won't reboot your computer unless you are running win 98.

task manager will start.... i'm interested in cpu usage and memory usage.... both are at the bottom of the window.

let me know what they are as well as the number of items adaware and spybot find

when those things are done we will attempt further troubleshooting.... i realize how frustrating it is but we will arrive at a solution.

OH, I'M JUST KIDDIN'!

You didn't state the Operating System you are using, so I am going to use Windows XP Home Edition for an example,

Now is that for a Soundmax? Dunno.

Do know you can look the model number up on the soundcard, if it is a SoundMax soundcard, go to SoundMax support, and download the drivers.

http://www.soundmax.com.tw/productlist.asp?action=hot

I can tell you how to step by step download AND install, the drivers on the HP Support page; or the drivers from the SoundMax page.

I bought a used GX520 and the volume does not work. There is no volume icon on the lower right corner. Under sounds and audio devices it says ''no audio device'', and I can't change anything. I own another...

sounds like ( no pun intended) your missing the audio drivers or controllers--right-click on MY COMPUTER then PROPERTIES then HARDWARE then DEVICE MANAGER and check if there are any yellow or red "X"s next to anything (you sound driver) right click and select update driver (you need to be connected to the internet)

No soundmax audio present.

I need to ask. Do you have two speakers showing? One fat red one and one gray one as you usually see on computers everywhere?
Try this either way.
Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, Entertainment, Volume Control and make sure you don't have a check mark in your Master Volume control found on the far left.
Are you using a Desktop or laptop?

if you are using the PC's motherboard sound I would upgrade to a soundcard. they are relatively inexpensive and easy to install. www.pricewatch.com

Playback on audio cd's sounds bad. Sounds scratchy.

I would always install the driver first , especially if they have an updated version since your last install. also might check if there is a direct connect line attches from the back of the cd rom to the soundcard or motherboard. sound newer motherboards handle sound better without these.
