Question about Gateway 400SD4 Notebook

4 Answers

Gateway 400SD4 I was using this notebook early this morning when it just quit. Power or Charge LED do not light. The battery is only 3 months old. I have 3 broken keys on this system and am awaiting a new keyboard, as early as today. I have completely disassembled this unit down to the motherboard. I am thinking it may be a motherboard problem but if there is any other possibilities or tests I can do I would like to know about it. I have never had a problem with this unit. The power jack is not damaged in any way, and the power supply is up to par.the inverter board was replaced about 6 months ago and it has been working well for a system of it's age. I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks, Vern Wallenta vwallenta@snet.net

Got 4 of the same comments. I have completely disassembled this unit, inspected every connection, and I just received the keyboard I ordered. I have also researched this problem for a full day on the internet. Have not seen anything new yet. I will reassemble this unit in the morning. All logical items have been looked at. I am an electronics engineer looking for something I have overlooked. Thanks

I'm sure you looked at the merely obvious but have you felt the tops of the capacitors to tell if they are swelled up.
also smell the board.... can you smell anything burnt ?

Look for some cold solder joints on the inverter board as well as the power connector..

It could sldo be a loose connection on the board...test every aspect of it that you can before going to the expense of buying a new board.thats the firsy thing people tll you is pay for the most expensive part first

Hey,

this does seem like a faulty motherboard, I assume you tested the charger. Its say its dead, unless your willing to spend hours troubleshooting it, I think the best solution is to replace the motherboard. I work in computers and we hardly ever go looking for the cause, we replace the motherboard.

Thanks,
Ekse

The reason for this is,, the motherboard has very small parts, unlike tv's where the parts are easyer to replace.

  • Ekse Sep 08, 2008

If you want to get down and dirty, start testing the connections, look for faulty components, or broken connections. I imagine, its going to take a long time..

  • Ekse Sep 08, 2008

so my solution is invisible for some odd reason.. again..

  • Ekse Sep 08, 2008

just wondering if you can see the solution?

Battery - blinknig range light

The orange blinking led indicates battery charge critically low, which could mean the battery is failing. The batteries are considered a consumable item and carry a 1 year warranty. Average life, depends mostly on usage. 300 to 500 discharge/recharge cycles is about average that translates to about 18 months use or so.

Have a gateway M465-E with power issues. Low

If the laptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out. Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles and will lose their charge capacity over time, until they won't charge up at all.
Check power adapter’s DC plug that connects into the laptop power socket with a multi-meter, the voltage should be slightly higher than the voltage that is printed on the label on the bottom of the adapter. If the voltage is zero or way below the voltage that is printed on the label then the power adapter is faulty and needs to be replaced.
If the adapter is OK then connect it to the laptop and power it up, then look at the power/battery charging LED light and wriggle the power plug in the laptop's power socket. If the power/battery LED light flashes and in a certain position this LED light stays firm, then the power socket is either faulty or it has a dry solder joint where it is connected to the motherboard.
This can be repaired but it requires the laptop to be completely dismantled to get at this power socket and repair. I suggest you get a quote first.

Gateway 400SD4 won't power up

replace the battery or have it tested. If these batteries don't have a minimum charge the machine will not boot into windows & will just shut down. You might try checking the battery condition with the "battery conditioner" in the bios

MX6427 No power

Reseat the memory modules of the computer. Take out the battery and ac adapter before you do it. if this will not work, take out other components of the system like the hard drive, dvd drive and see if you will get any error message on the screen or see if it will display other led codes.

Wont charge past 58%

After you got the new battery did you discharge it completely? meaning used it to the point where there was zero charge. And then charge it. This prolongs battery life. But even if you did not it should still not only charge till 58% so best suggestion while its new send it back.

You should try plugging in an external CRT or LCD monitor. Most laptops will automatically enable this port when you connect a monitor and reboot, but you may need to hit some combination of keys on the laptop if you don't see anything.

You should try this to see if the laptop is running properly other than the internal LCD or VGA hardware.
