My GE side by side refridgerator makes a "howling" sound. Any ideas?

My GE refridgerator is about 4 years old and recently began to make a "howling" sound? it is very loud and appears to be coming from the freezer section only. Any Ideas?

My GE side-by-side is making a similar sound--it sounds like wind howling. I decided to away from the wall, unplugged it and vacuumed the grate on the back bottom, then I opened up the grate and vacuumed the dust inside as well. I'm going to clean up the fan in there as best as I can and give it a drop of oil and see if that helps things at all. I will post results!

I also have a GE side-by-side that is making the same noise. My until is about 4 years old as well. It is definately coming from the freezer side and seems to be related to the blower that is on the inside of the freezer compartment. It seems like there is a damper somewhere that is opening and closing - and the howling noise comes and goes with the opening and closing of the damper. I do not have any idea how to fix it and would welcome suggestions.

The problem you are having is in the main control board. ge has had a problem with this part causing the fan motor to go into high and low speed which causes the howling noise. unfortunately it is a costly fix, around $125 for the part. if you are savy to changing this part it is a matter of unplgging about 5 connections and replugging them. the new board has an extra set of pin that nothing connects to. READ the instuctions and it is a simple fix, saving about $50-60 in labor costs.

My GE GSH22SGRESS has a howling noise comes from the evap. fanin the freezer. After I took it out, cleaned up and put it back in, the howling noise disappeared for several hours. Then it came back. Any time I tried to reseat the fan again, or changed the digital setting for temperature, the noise went away for a few hours while the fan running, then it ... comes back ! It certainly drives me crazy.

Is it the fan or the control board ?

It appears that the problem relates to the fluctuation of fan speed which is caused by the voltage jittering - driven by the control board.

this fan is a variable speed and is controlled by a board in the rear of the unit. your bearings maybe going out. The fan will ramp up to speed depending on the call for cooling the Thermistors is asking for

Fridge makes loud moaning sound

It is the control board. There is a recall on certain models and serial #'s that will cover the parts, but not all are covered. do a google search for hotpoint or GE howling noise. you will find out all the info you need.
