I have this very same issue. One of the battery options is the coolpix nihm battery. Those last much longer.

Same problem. The camera is less than 2 years old, and hasn't been used much

Make sure you have the internal menu for the battery selection correct.
Choosing the wrong battery may cause this.

Rechargeable batteries and alkaline batteries are not the same.

This may also be a condition and problem caused by the camera itself, and may need repair.

I have a problem with my Canon S31s - Each time I power up I am getting a 'Change Battery' warning and camera shuts down. I have tried 2 sets of Duracell and same prob keeps happening. The terminals are...

Why not try a set of rechargeable batteries? they can be used 5 times as long as alkaline batteries, every time you charge them. And when you have charged them yourself you can be sure they doe have the capacity needed for the camera. There is no way of telling alkaline batteries are full, because even when they are exhausted they will give the same voltage on your multimeter as a new battery.
I don't think it has to do with the date battery, because that would show you the date / time menu on the display.

My nikon coolpix L3 has always been a good little camera...but now I get the "battery exhausted" message, and it shuts off everytime I try to use it...yes, I've put in new batteries:)

Cameras are notorious for being picky about batteries. The problem is usually how much current they are providing.

What I've done and had other do is goto a store that had a decent return policy. Buy a charger and battery set with NiMh batteries rated at over 2000 mah (higher the better). Charge them up then test out the camera with them. If it fixes it then u know thats the problem.

I've seen this fix camera problems where way more expesive duracells didnt even hold up.

Battery exhausted warning

Hello justplainles:

Do the others show the same problem?

Try this: RESET ALL in the menu or setup menu.
If that does not work, make sure that the in the menu (if it is there) you set the battery type to rechargeable not alkaline .
You may try alkaline batteries, if it does the same, the camera may need repair.

Some cameras will not set the battery type automatically.

Nikon coolpix L4 won't take pictures & turns off

I have the same camera & personally, I hate it. My camera does that all the time, sometimes, it takes a while for the picture to actually take. Try holding down the button for a while, that's what I have to do with mine. The camera sucks up all the battery energy with only a few picture takes which I really don't understand. I think that's also why it's cutting off while you're using it. Does the phrase, "Warning: Batteries exhausted" sound familar, especially right before the camera shuts off? Oh, & before I go, my personal advice to you is: Get a new camera. I don't even know why I bought mine, soon I'm getting a new one. Yay. I hope this helped you, sorry about the camera problems. Much luck! :D

No firmware upgrade available yet, but did you set the camera settings to the TYPE of battery you are using? Go to Setup, chose Battery, then set type - alkaline, lith, metal hyd, etc and see if that helps.
