Symptoms * You have a new router, and cannot get online to the Internet. AND * The Setupwizard will detect dynamic IP even though you have a PPoE connection. (Going to router status on the administration page, there is a private IP address on Internet port. 192.168.x.x range.) Cause The SBC DSL modem SpeedStream 5100b, used on new DSL and Yahoo SBC DSL installations since Feb. 2004, causes the NETGEAR router Setup Wizards to fail, and prevents routers from connecting to the Internet. This problem affects many router brands. The modem can be distinguished from the earlier 5100 by a 5th light labeled "Internet". The SpeedStream 5100b's default configuration is "PPPoE on the Modem" ? matching a built-in PPPoE client convenience feature that sends login ID and password to SBC. To Work Around These Issues, Configure the Modem for Bridged Mode Note: In Bridge Mode you cannot to connect to the modem's configuration menu, except by resetting it as described below. 1. Disconnect the router from your network, and connect the computer directly to the SpeedStream modem 2. Open an Internet browser. 3. Type in the browser address field and click Enter. Don't go to the next step until this is finished. 15. Power on the router and wait for 1 minute. Don't go to the next step until this is finished. 16. Power on the computer. 17. Log in to the router by typing in your browser. 18. When prompted, using lowercase letters, type admin for the user name, and password for the password. Some older routers use 1234 for the default password. If you forgot your router password see 19. Use the Setup Wizard to connect to the Internet. To Reset the Modem To Enable Access to the Configuration Screen 1. Disconnect the computer from the modem. 2. Power off the modem. 3. Power off the computer. 4. Connect the Ethernet port of the modem to the computer Ethernet port. 5. Power on the modem and wait for 2 minutes. Don't go to the next step until this is finished. 6. Power on the router and wait for 1 minute. Don't go to the next step until this is finished. 7. Power on the computer. 8. Open an Internet browser. 9. Type in the browser address field and click Enter. The modem displays a configuration menu. 10. Click Advanced. 11. Enter the "Access Code" printed on the bottom of the modem. 12. Click PPP Location. Hello, Unfortunately, ISP techs often try to put blame on their clients equipment as much as possible. If your computer is showing limited connectivity, then this means that it is able to successfully connect to your wireless router, meaning that its probably not your adapter. Limited connectivity usually is a sign that you cannot reach the internet. This could be caused by multiple issues. In order to isolate the problem, try connecting your computer directly into your modem using the cable from the wireless router. If you can connect to the internet, then it is a configuration problem with your router. If not, then it is something with your connection to your ISP, in which case you need to call your ISP back and explain that situation. If you do happen to connect to the internet, then please reply, and we can go from there.

I cannot go into my e-mail, I thought I had the wrong user name and password or forgot it. I called ATT&T and they want to charge me. They gave me the user name and password but it still won't work.

If you have an Efficient/Speedstream 5100b or 4100 set to do PPPoE:

1. In your web browser browse to This address will be located on a yellow sticker on the bottom of your modem.
2. The first screen will ask you for your Modem Access Code. This also will be located on the same yellow sticker.
3. At the login screen type in your SBC member ID and password.
4. Click Connect.
5. If everything is succesful you will get a screen that says, "You Are Connected." and your Internet light will go solid green. If you username or password is invalid you will get a screen stating such. If there are other problems you will get a screen stating, "The DSL connection is down."

If you have the 2-wire Home Portal:
1. In your web browser browse to http://homeportal/setup or to (Or on older models its
2. Put in your 2-wire system password at the prompt.
3. If they key code is not already filled in put in 522P-22P4-6262-22AT-F2NV for PPPoE and 522P-22P4-2E62-22AT-F27W for static then next.
4. Put in your full member ID and password and next.
5. Select your timezone
6. You should now be connected.
If you have another modem other than the 2-wire Home Portal or 5-LED "5100B",

Windows XP:

1. Go to Start > Control Panel
2. Double click on Network Connections
3. Click the link on the left side that says "Create a new connection"
4. Welcome to the New Connection Wizard! Click Next.
5. Choose the top option labeled "Connect to the Internet." Click Next.
6. Choose the middle option labeled "Setup my connection manually." Click Next.
7. Choose the middle option labeled "Connect using a broadband connection that requires a username and password." Click Next.
8. It asks for an ISP Name. Basically, this is just going to name the icon, so name it whatever you prefer. We usually recommend "DSL Connection." Click Next.
9. It asks for your username and password. Enter both those in, and then uncheck the bottom checkbox that says "Turn on Internet Connection Firewall for this connection." If you feel confident that you know how to turn this off later, you may leave this box checked. When done with all of that, Click Next.
10. Completing the New Connection Wizard! Check the box that says "Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop." Click Finish.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response

Thanks, Joe

Reinstalling router

If it's not a hardware problem and you have a phone signal then the problem is with ISP. Check the 192 page to find the router status and contact the ISP to make a new connection for you.

When I connect through the router I cannot get on the web

connecting the router you must first bridge the modem. For as to do that you must first identify the modem of your modem. Example if its SpeedStream 4100/4100b/5100b bridging the modem will be doing the ffg steps: launch IE then on address bar type in then your prompted to the modem's page. Click on the advance tab then select PPP location then Bridge modem then click save changes. After which you may add now the router to the setup - blue cable connected to WAN port of the router and to the blue port on the back of your modem. Then ensuring that we have good physical connection - we then access the routers page. Or we are now in routers authentication --- it also depends on model or type of our router (LINKSYS, D-LINK, NETGEAR). For me to continue this please reply me the type of router you are using.
