When you installed the printer-driver from the CD-ROM that came with the printer, you also installed the HP Support Toolbox software. Run that software, and choose "cleaning cycle".

Download (as in Save, not Run) both and run the utility afterwards.

• Troubleshooting Setup and Install If your device is not recognized:
  • Verify that your cable is USB 2.0 high-speed compliant.
  • Ensure that your cable is connected correctly. Remove the USB cable, look at the end of the cable, and then match it to the pattern on the USB port. Make sure that it is not upside down. Insert one end of the USB cable completely into the USB port on the HP device and the other end into the back of the computer.

INSTALLING SOFTWARE ON WINDOWS 2000 and XP Printing system installation from CD-ROM, Internet download

1. Close all programs.
2. Insert the CD-ROM.
3. If the HP printing system installer program has not started after 30 seconds, complete steps 4 through 7.
4. From the Start menu on the taskbar, select Run.
5. Browse to the root directory for the CD-ROM drive.

9. Steps 4-9 will repeat to install the printer driver. File names will change. At step 9, you have the option to rename the printer. Click Finish. After files have installed, click Finish to close the dialog.

1. Download HP's Install Network Printer Wizard.
2. Run Install Network Printer Wizard and follow the on-screen instructions.

When you installed the software from the CD-ROM that came with your printer, you should have installed the "HP Support Toolbox".
One of the options in this toolbox is a utility to query/display the ink-levels.

Mac OS X (Native Mode)

1. Turn the computer on. Log in as the first created administrator account to install the software. You cannot install the software when logged in using added administrator accounts.
   
2. Place the CanoScan Setup Utility CD-ROM in the drive.
   
3. Double-click the CD-ROM icon.
   
4. Double-click the MacOS X folder/icon.
   
5. Note: Some versions of the CanoScan Setup CD-ROM will not include the Mac OS X version of Toolbox. If this is the case, you should download and install Toolbox from Canon's website. www.canontechsupport.com
   If you will not be installing Toolbox at this time, skip to step 7.
   
   Double-click the CanoScan Toolbox folder/icon.
   
6. Double-click the CanoScan Toolbox Installer icon. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.
   
7. Once the installation of Toolbox is complete, you should then access the ScanGear CS folder also located in the MacOS X folder.
   
8. From the ScanGear CS folder, click the ScanGear CS Installer icon. The installer will search for available install locations for the scanner plug-in driver. Follow the on-screen message prompts to complete the installation.

You can find drivers here. Select your OS in the box, then download the standard driver (not the WIA driver). Also download the CanoScan Toolbox listed under Software. Install both to your computer following the instructions.
