Re: No Internet Through the Router

If changing from a dial-up connection, see warning at bottom. Troubleshooting Steps 1. Connect your computer directly to the modem, without the router. If you cannot access the Internet, contact your ISP. 2. Reconnect the router, modem, and computer as they were before Step 1. Can you log on to the router? If not then: 1. Check that all cables attached to the router and computer are secure. 2. Check the Internet LED is lit. If it is not, troubleshoot light status, as explained in the router manual. 3. Check the LEDs for the ports with cables are lit. If not, move the cable to a different port. If there are still no lights, then troubleshoot light status, as explained in the router manual. 4. Check if the LED on the Ethernet adapter is lit. If it is not, then troubleshoot the adapter, do not continue this document. If the adapter is not NETGEAR's, contact the manufacturer. 5. Power off the router. 6. Power the router on again. 7. If you still cannot log on to the router, then do a hard reset on the router, as described here: 8. If you still cannot log on to the router, Contact NETGEAR: . 3. Run the router's SmartWizard. This lets the router discover whether you have a static or dynamic IP address, and whether you are using PPPoE to connect to your ISP. (For routers without this utility, go to Step 7.) 4. If a dynamic IP address is discovered, go to Step 8. 5. If PPPoE is discovered, configure your router with the username and password from your ISP. Click Apply to enter the data. Go to Step 8. 6. If a static IP address is discovered, configure your router with this information given by your ISP: the IP address for your router, the address of the ISP's DNS, and the address of the gateway. Click Apply to enter the data. Go to Step 8. 7. If the Smart Wizard does not find an IP address: 1. Power off the router. 2. Power off the modem. 3. Power on the modem. 4. Power on the router. 5. Go back to Step 3. 8. Click Test to access NETGEAR's online test page. If the page displays, then you have Internet access! 9. If the page does not display in a minute, check here: . 10. Find out if the modem's IP address can be seen by looking at the Router's Status Page, as described in the manual. If not, then reboot the modem, router, and computer, in that order ? waiting for each to completely reboot before rebooting the next. 11. If the modem's IP is seen, then there is a problem with your browser's settings. Your security may be set too high for the Internet service you are trying to use, or your browser may be configured for a dial-up connection. In Internet Explorer you check this using Tools > Internet Options > Security > Default Level. If the slider is set to "High", change it to "Medium". Click Tools > Internet Options > Connections. If the radio buttons in the center are not greyed out, then settings for a dial-up connection are being used. Warning: If you are a dial-up user converting to a cable or DSL connection, some software will not work when both types of configuration are present. Configuring your new connection may stop your dial-up connection from working. You may have to configure to connect one way or the other.

Connected wireless to router, excellent signal, but unable to connect to internet.

connected to wireless router with excellent signal may not means you are connected to internet. make sure your modem provided by internet service provider has signal! connect your computer to modem directly bypassing router. If you are online that means your internet is functional. Then connect modem to your Linksys router and use your wireless to log on to internet.
Your router wireless signal active and excellent means you are connected to router not necessarily the internet. The modem supplied by your internet service provider with active internet should be connected to you router on WAN port!
good luck!!

Im trying to set up the wireless router and Ive installed the modem, and double checked all the connections. I ran the installation disc for the router and it appears everything is good up to the point...

Connecting to the Internet using a router
  1. Choose a convenient location to begin installing your router, such as an open floor space or table. This does not need to be the permanent location of the router. For wireless routers, it may be necessary to re-position the unit after installing it as the signals may not reach all areas needed.
  2. Unplug the power to your Internet modem.
  3. Power down your computer(s).
  4. Plug the power in to your router.
  5. Connect your Internet modem to the router. The cable plugs into the router jack named "WAN" or "Internet". Turn on your Modem.
  6. Connect one computer to the router. Even if the router is a wireless model, connect this first computer to the router via a network cable.

  7. Turn on the computer.
  8. From the computer connected to the router, open your web browser. Enter the router's address,, and press Enter on your keyboard.
  9. Click Login in the upper right-hand corner of the page. The router does not ship with a password, so just click Submit.
  10. To configure the router to connect to the Internet, you must enter information provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) into the "Connection Type" section in the left-hand column under the "Internet WAN" heading of the router's configuration page. If using DSL Internet, you may need to enter the PPPoE username and password. Likewise, if you have been issued a static IP address by your provider, the static IP fields (including network mask and gateway) must also must be set in the router.
  11. If this is a wireless router, change the network name (referred to as SSID). While the router comes to you with a network name set at the factory, you may want to use something more familiar for your network. Read Changing the router's wireless channel and SSID for a description of this process.
  12. Plug the power back into your Internet modem.
  13. Verify that this computer can connect to the Internet properly. Open a new web browser and visit a few Internet sites such as or
  14. Finally, configure additional network security features as desired to guard your systems against Internet attackers.

The network is working but I can't get the internet

If the internet is not working first thing to check here is the internet connection from your modem without the router, make sure that your computer can access the internet when computer is connected directly to modem, if no internet without the router you need to contact your ISP for that, but if there's internet without the router you need to reset and reconfigure the router.....if you have the setup CD of the router just run that to reconfigure it back.........
