I would like to use my old scanjet 5100C again on my labtop. The problem is the scanjet uses the parallel port and on my new labtop with Widows XP only USB is available. Can I use every USB to parallel converter? What is importent when I buy one? Do I need sj660mu.exe for installing the software?

SOURCE: HP Scanjet 5100c and USB

Hi Richard,

Download the top listed driver from this HP support page:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=61840

I think the next one down, for parallel only, is the one you are probably trying to install. You have to uninstall that one first, before installing the new one.
Do it from the Control Panel, System, Device Manager. Uninstall the Driver, then 'Install Driver' and choose the 'Browse my computer for driver' type option, navigate to the folder you unzipped the new one to and select and install it. Then reboot.
It should work now.

Hope this helps

SOURCE: is there software available that will take scanned

For that you will need OCR software, one of the best is OmniPage Professional.

Hello and welcome draepeacock !
The only solution is a workaround :
If you have the W XP install disc , you can install a virtual version of W XP on your machine from http://www.vmware.com/products/player/
If you still have the install disc , you can also partition your primary and install W XP on the new partition from http://download.cnet.com/Partition-Wizard-Home-Edition/3000-2094_4-10962200.html.Back up your data first.

Both are easy and safe , no specific knowledge required .

HP Scanjet 4850 worked fine until I replaced the OS with XP SP3

win xp is 10 years out of date so you have lost the driver for the printer by the upgrade
If you go to the hp web site there may be still a down load for your model printer that is compatible to win xp
if so select that and down load it
run the down load when asked
AS win xp , win 7 are both out of date and no longer supported by Microsoft you should consider installing win 10

I did not find to drivers and controllers by my hp scanjet 5100c

Sorry to say, but the ScanJet 5100c is not a Vista compatible unit.
The same thing happened with some of the earlier HP units when XP came out.
This is not the only piece of equipment out there that is not supported in Vista, it is too old for them to write drivers for.

HP does offer a trade ups option for older equipment. You can read about it here http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01123715&lc=en&cc=us&lang=en&dlc=en&product=61840

HELLO. HP SCANJET 5200C ON WIN XP STOPS WORKING JUST AFTER STARTING. USING USB. TRIED RE-INSTALLING SEVERAL TIMES. IS IT BETTER TO USE PARALLEL CONNECTION? WB

Yes, if the USB is giving you consistent issues then parallel is a more straight forward method of access as it does not create a virtual port. Might slow your scans down though.

Software and hookup problems with dell vostro 400

Add a pci parallel card such as this to your vostro. www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=512
This will enable you to connect your scanner. Tiger direct will give you closeups of the connections on the interface card so you can check you have the right one.
