Yes, that correct you can just need to take the hard drive from your desktop and get a external hard drive ecnlosure where you need to put the hard drive and connect it to your laptop via USB cable, check this link for the sampole of the hard drive enclosure that you need to buy http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Category/category_tlc.asp?CatId=2777&name=Hard-Drive-Enclosure

Hope that helps.........

How to download my file from my old computer

The simplest way to transfer files from your old to your new computer is by using USB flash drives. Just save your files from the old computer onto the flash drive then plug this USB drive in to the new computer and save the files there. If you have large files, you can also use an external hard drive to copy and transfer files.

Took my hard drive out of my pc lap top because the mother board is fried and i bought the aluratek hard drive cover with usb connecter and mac compatible hooked it up to my mac lap top to transfer files...

The smart bit is irrelevant but you should be able to transfer your files off it OK.
I don't know how mac familiar you are but all you have to do normally is plug the drive in to a convenient USB port and plug in some power. (Some drive cases that don't have external power need to plug in to the computer with a special lead that has 2 USB clugs on one end.)
After 5-10 seconds the drive should pop up on the desktop, you can then open it and copy stuff off.
Where does this pop-up come from as I've not experienced one in years of Mac support.

Need to know how to transfer programs and files from old to new PC

There are three sets of items that you need to transfer.
It would be best to use an external USB drive and keep the data on the drive as a backup.

1. Settings (Internet favorites, desktop settings, cookies, address book, etc.)
2. Data (My Documents, and multimedia content)
3. Programs

It would be easy if the old computer was also a Dell; however, you can't simply "copy" to the new computer.

#1. Settings: There is a built-in utility called "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard". [Start] [All Programs] [Accessories] [System Tools] [Files and Settings Transfer Wizard]

#2. The transfer wizard has an option to copy "settings only", "Data Only", Settings and Data". Transfer only the settings and then transfer the data. It will go much smoother.

#3. Some programs are already on your new computer; however, unless the old computer was also a Dell, you will have to re-install most or all of your programs like MS Office, Printers, Scanners, Camera and Video applications, etc.

If you need more detail, please post a comment... Thanks .

How do I get all my old info, pics, documents and all stuff saved from my old desk top computer compaq presario 5700n windows 98 second edition so i can put it on my lap top, my flash drive won't work on...

Take the hard drive out and get someone knowledgeable to put it in their system as a slave drive. Then plug your flash drive into their system and copy all the files to it. I'd say this is the fastest and easiest solution to the problem. You could always network it to another computer and transfer the files also.

My lap top says that my hard drive is going to fail

You should back up your files regularly and be prepared to purchase a new hard drive and install Windows on the new hard drive etc. when the hard drive eventually fails.

I have a hard drive with music on

Ok, thanks for your patients, most of us do this to help fellow enthusiasts so we aren't sitting in a call center or an office venue. If you have the cable as you replied, it should appear as a drive if you click ,Start, run, and at the top of that applet "look in", should open and give you a list or picture of your system including all of the drives. you can also get there by clicking on "my computer" the icon on the desktop. It should show the external drive. From there you find the file location of the program, in the external drive and when you click on the picture or list of that drive you should be able to select the program that you want and click on "send to". At hat point just send it to your primary drive which is more than likelly "C", that shoul start the transfer, good luck with the project, Gym, and thanks for your patience

Move data from one computer to another with kingston 8gb data tra

When you plug in the Flash Drive to your old computer, it will show up in My Computer probably as Removable disk or "Kingston Data Travler". You want to open that link up and drag whatever files you need into that folder. After doing so you put the flash drive in your new computer and repeat the process except you drag the files out of the folder and onto your desktop or a folder of your liking.

I purchesed a pny usb 2.0 flash drive solution and I do not know how to download files from my lap top to my home computer. Can you help me with this problem?

2Copy the file(s) you want to transfer from their location on the laptop to the portable drive. Use whichever option for copying files you find easiest: Drag and drop using the mouse, cut and paste, or copy, using the menu options. Take the portable drive to the second PC, hook them up together, and copy the files to the new machine.
