This is caused by the firmware not loading correctly. Follow the steps below to fix this: 1. You will need to gain Internet access to download the latest firmware for your router. The firmware must be present on the computer that will do the upgrade. Temporarily bypass the router and plug directly into your Internet Service Provider?s modem to gain access, or use another location other than your own to get to the Internet and download the firmware. 2. Download the latest firmware for your router from http://www.linksys.com/download/firmware.asp. Select the model number of the Linksys router you have (BEFSR41) as firmware upgrades vary by model and version (select BEFSR41, do not select BEFSR41 Ver. 3 ). 3. Click the ?Get Upgrade? button. 4. After the firmware page opens, click the link that says, ?Click here to download the latest firmware...? and download the firmware file. 5. Once you download the Zip file, unzip it and extract all files. If you do not have an unzipping program, go to http://www.winzip.com and download WinZip, which will allow you to unzip the file. Before performing the upgrade, assign your computer a static IP address. For more information, please see Answer ID 534 for instructions. If using a 10/100-network adapter, change its speed to 10Mb, half duplex. For instructions on doing so: Windows 95/98/ME 1. At the Windows desktop, click on Start then choose Settings and click on Control Panel. 2. Double click the Network icon. This will bring up the ?Network Configuration? window. 3. Locate and highlight the icon with the green logo for your network adapter and click Properties. 4. This will display the network adapter's Properties. 5. Select the Advanced tab and click Connection Type (this may also appear as Media Type, Connection Speed, Mode, Link Speed, etc). The current default value should be set to "Auto sense" or "Auto". 6. Change the value of this option to 10Base-t, half duplex mode (usually the lowest possible option). The wording of this value may also vary, depending upon the make and model of the Network Adapter. Other possibilities include 10T half, 10Mb half duplex, 10Mbps half, etc. 7. Once this has been changed, click OK to return to the Network configuration screen. 8. Click OK again and Windows will ask to restart your computer. Click ?Yes? to restart. Windows 2000/XP 1. Go to Start click on Run and type in control ncpa.cpl. 2. Double click on the Local Area Connection that controls your network card. 3. Click Properties under Local Area connection status. 4. Click the Configure button. Then, click on the Advanced Tab. 5. Click Connection Type (this may also appear as Media Type, Connection Speed, Mode, Link Speed, etc). 7. Click OK after you made the change then click Close. Reloading the firmware 1. First, hold the reset button located on the back of the router for 30 seconds. 2. Next, to test communication between the Router and the network card: Go to Start, and select Run. Type in command and press [Enter ]. This will bring upthe MS-DOS promptwindow. 3. Type ping 192.168.1.1 and press [ Enter]. 4. You should get the following results: Pinging 192.168.1.1 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=128 Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=128 Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=128 Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=128 5. Once you get these replies, close out of the command prompt by typing in exit and pressing [Enter ]. 6. You may now proceed to upgrade the router?s firmware with the files that were downloaded. 7. Once the upgrade is complete, the router's red Diag light should no longer be blinking. Note: Be sure to go back to your network card settings (from the steps above) and change the speed of the link back to ?Auto sense? or ?Auto? (the original default setting) to restore full speed to the adapter. If any of the steps do not work, or if you are having other difficulties, please contact Linksys Technical Support for further assistance.

Power light is on and doesnt blink, Link light is solid green and there's a red light on the "diag". when I try to plug a Lan cable into the router I get no up link. My friend ask me to take a look at the...

You said there is a diag light lit up on the router.
In that case you can try to reset the rotuer for 30seconds . unplug the power and plug it back in. wait for a minute.
Check the lights on the rotuer. If you still see the diag light then try to reset the rotuer again. If there is a diag light on the router then the rotuer is not working.
Try to reset the rotuer for 2 - 3 times . power cycle the router till you get no diag light.
Once the diag light is gone then reconfigure the router.
Connect the modem to WAN port and computer to one of the 4 ports. Do not conenct anything to the uplink port.
Reconfigure the router.

Router not working and only the power light is on and the red diag light

Try umpluging the router for fifteen minutes. If that doesn't hit the reset button on the back, and reconfigure the router. If that doesn't do it sounds like your router might got toasted by a surge.

Power and Diag lights blink.

When the diag and power light always blink it only means one thing there's a problem with the router, Try tor eset it by pressing the reset button for 30 seconds then after that tunr off the power for 5 seconds then trun it back on, of the diag and power light are still blinking the router is already bad and needs a replacemenet, If the router is still under warranty have it replace to Linksys this is the number 800-3267114.

Linksys WRT54G router

Yes there's a possibility that the router is dead already because that diag light will only be lit up when there's a hardware failure on it, you can try press resetting the router by holding the reset button for 30 seconds then power it off then power back on hopefully the diag light will be off, if still on you need to replace the router already...

Hope that helps.........
