You can use VLC instead (videolan.org). It includes the libdvdcss library that will allow you to play even content-scrambled dvds. Or if you'd like to do it the Ubuntu way, you can check this page. It has all the instructions you need to play DVDs.

Operating system not found on tough book 29

Your hard drive is failed, or the boot sector has been corrupted.
Lets try the cheap fix first... watch this tutorial to rewrite the boot sector to the hard drive... and read my entire post. First.

To get your toughbook to boot to the rcovery console, boot the machine and press the F2 key repeatedly when the machine starts to boot. If that combo does not work, reboot again and try <ctrl>f11 (repeatedly). A third possibility is the F8 button. Reboot again, of course.
Good luck
Remember to BACK UP YOUR DATA FIRST!!!!!

How, you say? On another computer, download Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and burn the ISO file to a dvd. Then boot your computer from the disk and choose the "try" NOT the "install" option. Connect a usb Hard drive large enough to hold all your data. Using the Ubuntu file manager (second icon down on the totem on the left side of the screen) copy all your important files to the external harddrive. The drag and drop functions are very similar to windoze.
Btw.... I have been using Ubuntu since version 6.

Good luck

How to Make Ubuntu Play MP3 Files

Because of licensing issues, Ubuntu is unable to play MP3s out of the box. We’ll show you how to play MP3s and other restricted file formats in about four mouse clicks.
The philosophy behind Ubuntu is that software should be free and accessible to all. Whether MP3 and other file formats are free is unclear in many countries, so Ubuntu does not include software to read these file formats by default.
musicplayer_001.png Fortunately, it does include a package that installs the most commonly used file formats all at once, including a Flash plugin for Firefox.
Note: These instructions are for Ubuntu 10.04. There are small differences for earlier versions of Ubuntu.
Play MP3 Files
Open the Ubuntu Software Center, found in the Applications menu.
sshot28.png
Click on View and ensure that All Software is selected.
ubuntusoftwarecenter_001.png Type “restricted extras” into the search box at the top-right. Find the Ubuntu restricted extras package and click Install.
ubuntusoftwarecenter_002.png Enter your password when prompted.
authenticate_003.png Once the install is complete, close out of Ubuntu Software Center, and you’ll be able to play MP3 files! To confirm this, we’ll open up Rhythmbox, found in the Sound & Video section of the Applications menu.
sshot116.png Our test MP3 plays with no problems!
Note: If Rhythmbox tells you that MP3 plugins are not installed, close Rhythmbox and reopen it. You should not have to install anything extra through Rhythmbox.

Despite this extra step, playing the most common audio and video file formats – including Flash videos on the internet – is simple. All the software comes installed, you just have to teach them how to read your files.

I can not play movies in my totem movie player, AMR is missing

Hi..
AMR (Adaptive Multi Rate) is common audio file format for mobile devices like mobile phones, laptops, portable recorders.. etc.

in fact totem movie player can't play any amr files (files encoded in amr codec) by itself. Totem Player depends on Gstreamer libs, which haves necessary media handling components .

from your post its not clear that whether your totem can't play movie files from the very beginning or just you can not play movies recently.

your totem player may lacks Gstreamer library files or somehow your Gstreamer libs got corrupted recently.
Reinstalling Gstreamer Library file may help you.

you can find latest source version of Gstreamer on this page
(more detailed download of Gstreamer can be found on http://openports.se/multimedia/gstreamer-0.10 )

I've installed cyberlink powerdvd 10 ultra version in my laptop, but when i'm playing a dvd there is no audio. Do i have to install an audio codec? can you bsuggest me one. thank you.

Hey hi. Cyberlink powerDVD will play all the dvds. But you just try playing the same dvd in other players like VLC media player and Media Player Classic. These are the two players available in the market which will play audio and video of all extensions. So just try playing the dvd with this. Still you cannot able to get the audio means, there might be the problem in the disc also. So go for another dvd and try playing it. This is how we need to sought out the problems.

Ubuntu Troubleshooting

One of the most common issues people have after getting their codecs installed into Ubuntu, is the sad discovery that Ubuntu won’t play Avi files from inside of your Firefox browser. Well, there is a fairly simple fix for this - lose GStreamer and switch to Xine.

You do this from Synaptic located from System, Administration in Ubuntu. In the search box for the application, just do a query for totem-xine. Once it comes up, select (double click) and then allow the uninstallation of totem-gstreamer. It’s simple!
