It sounds as if your hard drive has some bad clusters or errors, if you wish to repair your system, when the notebook is turned on press F2 or Del, i think Del to enter the bios and make the cdrom the first boot device otherwise the disc will not be seen.

Save the settings and exit for a reboot and then insert your cd before it starts to boot up again and it should halt on the boot and say press enter to boot from cd, do so and then depending on the cd you have should say press 'R' for repair or F8 or Enter to install windows, if you have docs and stuff still on your notebook, choose 'R' as this will not delete anything, just repair the system files, and then follow the set up instructions.

Acer laptop screen is dark an will not brighton l

I would like you to try 2 things:

1. Press and hold the blue Fn key then press the right arrow key a few times and see if it gets brighter. If that doesn't work try #2

2. Press and hold the blue FN key then press F5 or F6 not sure which one changes your screen. If it seems to mess something up it's ok. Just press the same combo that messed it up once or twice and it will go back to normal.

Please comment and let me know if it worked! :)

Scan for Viruses

Sudden, unexplained computer issues are commonly caused by a virus infestation. These sneaky programs secretly install themselves on your system and alter the way the machine functions and responds to commands. Eliminate any hidden malicious programs by running a deep scan to find and destroy unwanted programs. You may need to perform a restore or recovery action on your system afterward to replace corrupted files with the correct versions.
Troubleshooting

To determine whether your non-functioning F5 key is due to a software issue or faulty hardware, connect a separate keyboard to your Pavilion. If the F5 key works on the external keyboard, the problem with your Pavilion's F5 key could be physical, such as a dirty key or spilled liquid. If the F5 key does not work on the external keyboard either, the problem likely lies in the software. Make sure that your operating system files are up-to-date to encourage proper communication between the keyboard and motherboard.

Thorough Cleaning

A keyboard key can become non-functional if it cannot make contact with the proper sensor beneath it, such as from accumulated debris or a spilled liquid. Dust, hair and lint can collect beneath and between your Pavilion's keys, which can interfere with proper contact when the layer becomes too thick. Sticky residue left behind by sugary liquids, such as soda or juice, can cause the key to stick, preventing the computer from registering the press. Thoroughly clean the area beneath the F5 key by gently prying the key off and using a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol to remove any dirt or residue.
Safe Mode

When you start your Pavilion, numerous other programs automatically start with it. Any of these programs could cause the F5 key to become non-responsive. Starting the Pavilion in Safe Mode will load only the essential operating system files and drivers, and if the F5 key works while in this mode, your problem most likely lies with an installed program or hardware device. To enter Safe Mode, restart your laptop and press the F8 key immediately. You'll enter the "Advanced Boot Options" menu, where you can use your arrow keys to select "Safe Mode" and press "Enter." If your F5 key still does not work, you may have a problem with your operating system files.

Hello,

WOW!!! This could be from many things, too many to sort through in this form. Reboot your pc and enter the BIOS setting. Go to the exit screen to select ALL DEFAULT SETTINGS. Save and exit. As the pc starts to reboot, press F10 (yours may be F5 or F8) to enter boot menu, select "Last known good start (boot)" If your system encounters the same problems, you may need to reinstall your os/apps from your recovery sector.

Please post your results and we will continue if needed.

Good Luck

The display is black

If you can still hear everything else working try adjusting the brightness, there should be keys to do this on the keyboard, if it has no effect i suspect your lcd back light has gone.

reinstall the operating system--press F9 while you are booting up,it will accept this F9 boot every other reboot--choose disk scan to clear corrupted filesystem--or choose re-install OS--then press "E" then press "B" then follow through the first few configuration pages.
Also FN/F1 sets the screen to sleep, then FN/F5 switches between screen and external monitor facility, you might have corrupted these settings

Screen not working

It could be the 'back light' is burned out.
Or
Press Fn and F5 simultaneously to make sure the display
priority is not set for the built-in screen.
Or
Press the 'brightness up' key a few times.

Display problems
Here are some typical display problems and their solutions:
The screen is blank.
Display Auto Off may have gone into effect. Press any key to
activate the screen.
You may have activated the instant password feature by pressing
Fn and F1 simultaneously. If you have registered a password, press
any key, type the password and press Enter. If no password is
registered, press any key. The screen reactivates and allows you to
continue working.
If you are using the built-in screen, make sure the display priority is
not set for an external monitor. To do this, press Fn and F5
simultaneously (once). If this does not correct the problem, press Fn
and F5 simultaneously again to return the display priority to its
previous setting.
HINT: Holding the Fn key and pressing the F5 key several times will
advance you through the display options.
If you are using an external monitor:
❖ Check that the monitor is turned on.
❖ Check that the monitor’s power cord/cable is firmly plugged in.
-- Try adjusting the contrast and brightness controls on the
external monitor

ACER cracked screen..external monitor???

Hi there.
The keyboard toggle you are using is the correct one.
Sometimes you have to hit Fn + F5 a couple of times to stay on there is no real set time. Make sure Fn + F6 is on so the laptop screen stays on.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!
