The problem there is an internal component on the circuit board might be burned like resistors, transistors or capacitors. Try to open the casing of your TV and visually check eny visible burned electronic piece. If you found one, you can just replace it. If you have no idea on how to solder and desolder electronic parts, better have it repaired by a TV technician.

This sounds like poor solder connections at the vertical IC. If this is corrected soon, there will be no other problems. If left as is, the IC will eventually fail. If you can solder, you can fix this yourself. Look for a small flat IC with about 11 pins attached to a heat sink. It will be marked LA7837 or something similar. If you post the model number, I can give you the exact part marking.

Kep me posted.

    I can't find the IC listing for your model at this time. If you look in the back of hte set for a small flat IC attached to a heatsink with about 11 pins and post the marking on the IC, I'll confirm that it is the correct one. You may have to remove the clamp off of the IC to read the marks.

Picture shrinks to only show top half

This is a common problem on certain models of Philips Magnavox TV sets. The most common symptom is the screen will shrink and expand over and over. After the TV heats up for a while the video will work like normal. After a few weeks or months your TV will eventually stop working and not have video. You can get complete parts and instructions from www.TvRepairKits.com

TV screen shrinking from top to bottom.

My Dearest, j30;

It sounds like you have a problem in the 9 volt circuit which feeds the vertical output ciruit; CHECK C2P05 100 UFD 16 V OFF PIN 3 OF IC2P01 AND IC2P01 PART # 270P466020 (9-VOLT REGULATOR). BOTH ARE ON THE SIGNAL PCB.
This is not a repair that a novice should try, but if you call a factory authorized service center and have them come out and give you an estimate; AND tell them what the problem is, you will look know what you are talking about!

check the solder around the area of the vertical IC. solder is either cracked or else cold. Cold solder appears as dull. Resolder anything that isnt shiny.

Normallly, if the format button on the remote for the television does not achieve the desired affect, then, a cable box or a satelite box is where the change needs to be made. For example: A Motorola Cable box needs to be set up to go to a wide screen when an analog signal is detected. It's difficult to determine the repair without knowing the hook up of the peripherals. Hope this helps.

the tv is having a vertical problem have a tech look at it for possible repair.the problem is intermittent therefore it could be that it has cold solder or the vertical ic needs to be replaced along with spme caps that are not filtering the voltage properly,good luck.
