Hello,

If it has been some time since it has locked up I would suggest that you power of the laptop with the power switch and then restart it in safe mode by pressing F8 before you see the Windows logo. This should bring up an Advanced Startup Menu. Choose Safe Mode with Networking using the arrow keys. Once you have it highlighted press Enter to start that option.

You will see files scroll down the screen. This is normal. After that you will see a dialog box asking whether you want to start in safe mode. Choose No so that you can start the System Restore Option. Then follow the instructions to restore your computer to an earlier time. Then from the available dates choose a date that was before the updates were downloaded.

Here are some screenshots of System Restore for XP:

Hope this works. Please remember to rate this information.

Sounds like it went out during an update.... reboot the computer tapping the f8 key.... reboot to either safe mode or last known good configuration.

In most cases if you are running Windows 8 you have to reinstall the system again. Try to learn to select updates manually cause not all Automatic Updates are needed for personal computer use.

Failure to configure updates reverting changes ?

When (if?) you regain control of your PC, turn off or disconnect the Internet and disable automatic updates.

Then perform a system image backup.

Only perform manual updates from then on.

If you have a similar problem, restore the system image.

My Gateway laptop won't boot up it keeps saying "failure configuring Windows updates reverting changes" Do not turn off your computer

Make sure the Date & Time are set correctly on your machine. That can interfere with Windows Update. If your computer has the wrong date/time, you need a new cmos battery (available anywhere). Then, If you are running Windows 7, try the "Windows Update - Reset" options here... http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/91738-windows-update-reset.html?filter

Not configuring update correctly...reverting changes

You didn't give your make, model of laptop, or your OS? What updates? Did you reboot your machine? Shut down, unplug, remove battery, plug in, reboot. Sometimes if you have change the OS on a machine you will get erroneous updates. Sometimes due to other conditions you will get a error message that may help to ID the problem.

Updates not configured correctly reverting changes help

Good morining, afternoon, evening or night; whatever time of day you are viewing this solution post. Thank you for choosing FixYa to answer your question. Your updates aren't configured correctly and you want to know if reverting changes will help? The answer is yes! You can revert changes to an update by using a tool called System Restore. System Restore is a tool provided by Windows Vista that allows you to revert to your computer's last known configuration settings. Do not worry, this will not restore your computer to it's factory settings unless you are installing Vista for the first time. This is helpful if you want to resolve a corrupted file or uncorrect update configuration issue; an error causing you to not be able to upload your OS: or something causing your system to run slowly.

To upload System Restore:

1. 9_26_2011_1_23_39_am.pngClick the Windows logo or press it on your keyboard.

2. 9_26_2011_1_27_06_am.pngThe quickest way to find this is to type "System Restore" in the search box.

3. 9_26_2011_1_29_08_am.pngOnce the System Restore link is shown, click it.

4. 9_26_2011_1_33_59_am.pngIf User Account Control (UAC) asks you (the administrator) to give it permission, click Continue.

5. 9_26_2011_1_37_13_am.pngThe System Restore menu comes up and asks you if you want to either use the recommended restore point or a different restore point of your choosing. I would choose the most updated restore point if possible (ususally the "Recommended restore" one).

6. 9_26_2011_1_39_22_am.pngClick Next>

7. 9_26_2011_1_42_16_am.pngClick Finish to confirm your restore point. You will need to close any open programs or files before doing so because your computer will be restarted.

If you want, once the system is restored, you can try the update again if you want. Knowing from experience, I have had to install update two even three time before they were successful. I hope this answers your question and solves your problem.

uninstall the updates : if you are using vista then go to contolpanel, click on programs, and then programs and features, and on the right hand side panel you would find view installed updates, select all of them or those which you know are causing the problem , and uninstall them , and also go to windows update in the control panel and then click on change settings and then click on check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them..
