Question about Philips 60PP9352 60" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Which IC is for red convergence?

Recently my red convergence has become completely screwed. I have left/right adjustment, but no up/down. Blue is fine. I'm guessing, through reading through other answered posts, that it is an IC failure.

My question is: can i get away with only replacing one, as in, is there one of the two that governs the red only? Or am I best off just replacing both?

Thanks for your time.

Thanks for the reply. I actually already ordered two ICs on Friday which are hopefully on the way. I feel pretty confident from already looking at the board that I can replace them easily enough.

I did not however read much about replacing resistors as well. Are these definateley needed? And if so, can you possibly give me an idea of where to find them on the board?

    Thanks again.

I'll take your advice and test/replace the resistors as well. I'll also be sure to post the results as soon as the repairs are made.

    So here's the final results-

I was able to fix my t.v.! Turns out it was the IC chips. Here were the steps I took to make the repairs and my advice to others:

    1) Do some reading. I found these two links very informative and useful:

    http://www.fixya.com/support/t988787-con...
    http://cmpalmer.blogspot.com/2006/11/fix...

    2) I purchased my chips from Suburban Electronics through ebay. A two pack with shipping ran me about $17 and I received them within 4 business days.

    3) When taking the board out of your tv, TAKE YOUR TIME! There are around 20 cables you need to detach. Use masking tape and label each one. You can then either mark the board with a sharpie, or write down where it connects. Each board connection is numbered. So I did- "cable C connect to 1021" and so on.

    4) Test your resistors. As Slinteriors here said, some of them might be dead. If you get a reading, they are more than likely ok. Some of them run in parallel and are tied, so you will get split readings.

    5) Know your sodering. While the connecting pins are not the smallest I've worked with, they can be tricky.

    6) Once again, TAKE YOUR TIME putting the board back in. Check off each wire as you reconnect it and make sure it's properly seated as you do. Leave the back of the tv off just in case you need to go back and check your connections.

    7) Don't freak when the convergence is still off. Go to your settings, reset it to factory default, and align them.

Hope you have as much luck with it as I did. As once user said, it's nice to make a repair yourself for around $20 that would have cost you $400+ otherwise.

my red crosshairs will not move left or right but will move up and down... i have tried this fix already with new convergence circuits and all the resistors tested good... this is a used tv from an inlaw so there is no warrantee opportunity...

You need to replace both because they are both linked together with the green as each IC controls one color fully and half the green, so when one IC fails that places a strain on the other IC through the green, so that one will soon follow. You need two STK392-120 ICs and you will also need four 6.8 ohm 1 watt resistors. You can get replacement ICs and resistors at the following link with free installation instructions with pictures so you can do the repair yourself. Heres the link.

resistors 3149 - 3160 are all 6.8 ohms 1 watt. You will definately need at least two possibly four of them I have never seen the DPTV chassis phillips magnavoxes ever lose a Convergence C with out at least two of the resistors neediing replacement. They are located near the ICs in groups of two.

you will need to unsolder on side of each resistor and lift that end out of circuit to test. Also look closely at the center of the resistor for discoloration, as you can often see the discoloration on phillips resistors.

Your tv has a problem with the convergence, adjust it using the original remote go to the setting's menu then go to the convergence section. Adjust the convergence color red and blue the green color is your guide you cannot move this green color, then you should move the red and the blue in all direction left to right, up and down. If you cannot move the red and the blue far enough the convergence IC is defective it must be replace in order to align this convergence. Feel free to send feed back good day and best regards.

does the blue convergence crosshairs move up and down left and right? Does the red move left or right. does the red move up at all. this might indicate a faullty resistor, bad ic or just bad convergence data. let me know i am here to help

This is a convergence output IC problem. convergence board would have to be removed - remove and replace 2 STK IC's and check the surrounding resistors. Shops usually charge between $200-$300

go into convergence menu in customer menu--I do not care if you give me a vote or not--I am not here for that--I try to help people---in the customer menu if the convergence will not adjust in some direction---ie---red or blue will not either adjust up/down or left right--any one of these directions--you have a bad convergence IC

if i understand you right your blue convergence is off? and you have tried to go into the adjustment for the convergence? now do you crosshairs move up and down and left and right? on bpth red and blue. I see two possiblitys for this your convegence output ics commonly called stks or and you convergence ouput resistors. not a difficult repair for most shops and aroud 250 for parts and labor the ic run about 45 apeice

The Screen looks 3D & Colors don't line up on my big screen????

If the convergence is off more than 1/2 inch or so you can't adjust. you have a failure of hardware. most likely the output IC. This set has 2 outputs for convergence. Each output contains 3 circuits, Six circuits altogether 2 red ,2 blue and 2 green. The normal customer adjustment will only alow adjustment of blue and red. They should be converged onto the green. There is a much more complex adjustment in the service mode for Geometry and convergence. These adjustments are only needed when you replace a failed componnent like the output ic. These ICs have been upgraded several times since the production of this set. The latest and most powerfull version is STK394-160. If feel up to it I suggest changing both outputs and the corresponding output resistors. Then do a complete geometry and convergence alignment.

Which IC controls the blue convergence

Usually the second IC controls blue example if the two ICs are IC6001 and the other is IC602. 602 would usually control blue the first IC will almost always control red.

Covergence and Bowed Picture Problem

can you adjust any color of convergence in user menu blue, or red up or down left or right. if you can make any up or down left or right adjustments on any color then the likelihood it wont be a convergence ic. it would be a output resistor. so see if you can get any movement. with it being bowed i was suspect an convergence ic.
