Question about Maytag Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have a Maytag refrigerator. Before leaving for holidays four months ago I emptied it. When I came back from holidays I found ice in the freezer. I thought that the ice was harmful and i unplugged the refrigerator and I cleaned the accumulated water. Now the freezer works but the refrigerator does not. The model is an old top bottom refrigerator. Thanks

Defected DEFROST HEATER can cause frost build up on the panel at the back of the freezer, and freezer stop cooling and ice frozen on unit so air could not flow to refrigerator side.Water will coming out caused of unbalanced freezing, and causing the flooding of water in the floor. You must change this defroster heater assembly so it will works normal again..
Heavy Frost on the Coils
This is good! This indicates a defrosting system failure which is a simple control problem. It also means that the sealed system (compressor, evaporator coil, and all associated tubing) is fine as wine in summertime. Defrost system problems are easy fixes that anyone with a pulse can do with maybe just a little help from their friends. The problem will either be the defrost timer (or Adaptive Defrost Control board, if so equipped), the defrost thermostat, or the defrost heater. The top freezer of my Maytag refrigerator does not keep ice cream firm. It will freeze water, but ice cream is like cool whip. Help!

Check your ref/frz settings. Check the condensing coil for dust/lint/other. You may also have a defrost problem. Check back panel in frz for ice/frost. Try emptying unit and leaving it off and doors open for 24 hrs. If it starts cooling afterwords, is probably dft cycle.

Refrigerator stopped cooling 2 days ago. Freezer works fine. What is broken? Appliance is four years old. Replaced compressor almost exactly 1 year ago.

Check the fan in the freezer and be sure it's working, isn't blocked by product or isn't clogged with ice. If this fan isn't working the refrigerator section won't cool properly.

Maytag Plus side by side refrigerator stops cooling. I unplugged it for 24 hours. When I plugg it back in, it works fine for about 2-3 months. Then it stops again and works fine after being unplugged for...

Take food out of the freezer, take out the racks, take off the back panel on the bottom/back ( probably 4-6 screws).. You will see a fan. If that fan has ice around it, then take it all off, chip it, hair dryer, what ever you want. Unplugging it for 24 hours is not enough for all of the ice to melt so it is probably taking a couple months to build back up. Generally this happens in a high humidity time of the year. It will probably happen again, do not freet. Just clean it again. I know one customer that had it happen two years in a row and that was about four years ago. He has had the unit (Maytag Plus side by side refrigerator) about 10 years and is just fine with it. Little inconvience, but sometimes that is the breaks in life. Good luck.... f067b6b.gif

MSD2756GEB (Side By Side) Runs All the time

I went to the Maytag site and found a similar QA area and found a short article that talked about frost build up and/or blockage of any sort preventing airflow from the freezer compartment to the refrigerator compartment. They said this would impact proper operation of the refrigerator.

I emptied out the freezer after I inspected and found significant frost/ice in the upper right hand corner around the "scoop" that directs airflow into the refrigerator compartment. I took that off and removed all the ice build up (almost 1/2 blockage). I then removed the entire back panel and noticed that my refrigeration unit was completely iced up with significant build up around all the wires and thermostat.

I defrosted the entire unit with the aid of a hairdryer (at a safe distance so not to over heat anything) and then made sure my evaporator coils were all clean in the back and turned the refrigerator back on. (I unplugged it during the defrost operation.) I made sure that the fans worked both above the interior refrigeration unit and at the evaporator unit. Then I waited for the compressor to kick on.

Wallah! Everything so far was working so I put the rear panel back together in the freezer section, closed her up and waited to see what would happen. So far I've had to turn down the refrigerator section to around 5 and the freezer to about 4. The unit now seems to run correctly, shutting off after it runs for a while.

So I guess I'll wait and see how long this defrosting step works. Maybe the self defrost switch or something is not working and the problem will return in a month or so. We'll see..............
