My Thinkpad will not boot. I bought a new battery because for a while I could only use my laptop when it was plugged in. But, with the new battery it still does not boot. All of the "idiot" lights come on when I push the power button but the nothing. Is this a fixable problem without loosing everything on my computer? Thanks for the help. Susan

Hi, The Thinkpad T42 doesn't have a reset button on it like the older IBM's used to.
There could be a problem with the battery. With the machine turned off remove AC power and then the battery. Plug in AC power again and see if the laptop will boot without the battery. If it boots let it load up as normal and then shut it down again, reinsert the battery and try to boot it up. If it boots fine, if not then there is a problem with the battery.
TRY AND REMOVE YOUR RAM AFTER THAT RESET THE MACHINE BY REMOVING THE SYSTEM BATTERY AND SHORT CIRCUITING THE BATTERY CONTACTS FOR 30 SECONDS MAKESURE THAT YOU'VE TAKING LAPTOP BATTERY OFF FROM THE MACHINE AFTER THAT PUT BACK THE RAM THE TRY TO SWITCH IT ON AGAIN
1# remove the battery from the thinkpad and ac adapter.
2# hold the power button for 40 seconds.
3# plug in the ac adapter and turn on the botton.
4# see it for works what trying to do to thinkpad is recyle the power .
give it a try and see if it work if it doesnt let me know
If the the ram is the problem of your system, there should be a power on light on the system. indicating that some of the component of the system is not working correctly. But since you mentioned there is no light, it is the possibility that the problem is the motherboard itself.
