Why won't my Nikon D40 stay in infra red remote control mode, trying to take wildlife shots, have to wait for right shot but after about 1min. remote does not work?

The infrared sensor consumes battery power whenever it is waiting for a signal. By default the D40 will time out after one minute.

If you go into the Custom Menu and select item 17, you can change the timeout to 5, 10, or 15 minutes.

Slow sync flash - nikon d40

Set the exposure mode to Manual (M) or Shutter-priority (S) and specify the shutter speed yourself. You'll have to set it sufficiently slow in order to see any difference between front- and rear-curtain.

Don't know what I did, but the monitor on my D40 doesn't display what is captured by the viewfinder. It does display the photo after I snap the shot.

You may have accidently set your "Image Review" facility to off, in the camera menu refer to page 75 of the instruction manual. Also look at Custom setting 15  - Auto Off Timers, this is also linked with how long your Image review monitor stays active, refer to page 78 for this. Cheers Ian

I dropped my nikon d40 and there may be something wrong with it.

Being a slower, baseline SLR, sometimes it needs to take some time to record all the images to the memory card. In the viewfinder you'll sometimes see the work "job" in the right, and it won't let you do anything. This means the camera is processing the photos. It's a normal pause.
