Keypad has suddenly stopped working rendering phone inoperable. Can't see a 'sticky key', have 'powered off & on', reseated SIM card. The four 'top' keys (options / menu / dial / hang up) may be still working - they at least emit a sound. Any ideas?

Most likely the keypad is dirty underneath.I suggest that you bring your phone to your celluar service provider for assistance. They will advise you what options is available regarding repair cost/exchange.There is a slight possibility that one of key is sticky causing the whole keypad not to work.First remove the battery from the phone.Press all of the keys one at a time.Reinstall the battery.
u need to change the key pad until then it wont work.
two keypad IC's under the keypad and next to the keypad connector
unfortunately all the keypad points are linked to the IC's and so even
if one key doesn't work it is related to these IC"s in question UNLESS
the keypad connector is dirty or sticky please do service your phone or
take it to a reliable technician
If you are comfortable taking part of the phone apart there is something you can try. Remove the two Torx screws right below the battery. Gently pull the plastic cover loose. There will be a cable that connects this portion of the phone to the keypad/LCD/etc. Clean the connector on this cable and the connector it was plugged into with 99.5% Isopropyl alcohol. Reseat the cable and the part of the phone you removed and replace the screws you removed. If this does not work the keypad flex on the phone is probably damaged and will need to be looked at by a repair center.
