A microwave can be dead for many reasons.

If the fuse is good, it may be an open thermostat or thermal cutout (TCO) / thermal fuse on or near the magnetron or on top of the cavity / body of the oven.

If it goes dead for a while during or after cooking then comes back on, the magnetron is probably overheating and causing the magnetron thermostat to open.

Then when it cools, it closes the circuit and allows power through again.

When checking TCOs or thermostats, if it has a hood fan thermostat, that should read open, as opposed to the others, which should read closed.

The TCOs you need to be concerned usually with have black wires. You can ignore the ones with blue / violet wires in this case.

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it went dead a few seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.

If it goes dead or blows the breaker (or GFI) when you plug it in or open or close the door, then there's a problem with a door switch or door switch mount.

If it's intermittent or random, it may be a bad connection, usually on the control board or a loose fuse holder, or even an intermittent fuse.

You should do a continuity test on the fuse while it's in the holder (with the microwave unplugged, of course) then turn the fuse by hand or take it out and put it back in, then test it again.

If you remove the fuse, then press the meter leads against the ends, it can allow internal contact to be made and make a bad fuse appear to be good.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

I have GE JVM1540DN1BB microwawe. It beeps all the time and says "keypad sorted" and service needed. The beep sound is annoying and it beeps every 30 seconds

see this causes and fix it. God bless you
Touchpad and Control Panel If the microwave buttons don't work the touchpad and control panel assembly are probably defective
Touchpad If the microwave buttons don't work the touchpad might be at fault. Generally speaking, if the display is working and some of the buttons respond correctly but some don't, the problem is with the touchpad.
User Control and Display Board If the microwave buttons don't work the main control board is most likely defective and will need to be replaced.

Main Control Board If the microwave buttons don't work the main control board is most likely defective and will need to be replaced.

Bought house with GE Profile Convection Oven. Do not know proper cooking directions, nor how to work many of the features. Also no light bulb in it & would like to know which one to buy. Need manual t

GE has the manuals for most of their appliances on their site: http://www.geappliances.com/service_and_support/literature/ . Just enter the model number and click Submit.
The direct link to the manual for the JVM1790 Over-the-Range Convection/Microwave oven is here: http://products.geappliances.com/MarketingObjectRetrieval/Dispatcher?RequestType=PDF&Name=49-40480-1.pdf . GE only lists the JVM1790CK, JVM1790BK, JVM1790WK and JVM1790SK.

I hope this helps.

Ten years old. all fine until yesterday. it quit heating. what part do i need to replace and how do i do it? serial rm957366s model jvm230wv 001 manufactured 1995

There are a couple of possibilities. Most likely the oven needs a new magnetron tube, the microwave source. Ten years is a long time, and yours is probably now dead. The GE part number for a replacement tube is WB27X10249, and you can find several sources online where you can buy them. The price is around $125 on average.

The other possible trouble is a high-voltage rectifier that has failed. They usually fail by shorting out, though. When that happens, the oven usually makes a loud humming noise when it tries cooking. Since you say it just quit heating, I'd say the magnetron is to blame.

MICROWAVE OVENS USE HAZARDOUS VOLTAGES WHICH CAN KILL YOU. You may want to refer repair to a professional if you decide to keep the oven. (Given the part price, you may want to use this as an excuse to buy a new one anyway. Add in repair labor and it may only be a little less expensive than replacement.) But if you decide to try repairing the oven yourself, it's not impossible.

The hardest part in working on an over-the-range oven is taking it down. The magnetron is held in by nuts on threaded mounting posts and a couple of wires connect to it. Just make sure the oven has been unplugged for some time before working on it, Discharge the high-voltage capacitor (this site explains how) before you do anything else. Then it's a matter of removing the old tube and installing the new one. Get a new magnetron if you decide to try this; some sellers offers parts that have been removed from working ovens but the sometimes don't include a wire mesh gasket needed to avoid microwave leakage.

Hope this helps you figure out what to do. Thanks for using Fixya!

I am in desparate need of either a GE Jet343G oven with a manufacture date before May of 1989 - or a manual or some documentation that shows this oven was made before than.

Glass Tray replacement needed

Those model numbers are not correct. That's likely why you're having trouble.

For model number JVM1790SK01, the part number is WB49X10114.

That's available here.
