Question about SimpleTech 250GB USB2.0 7200 RPM External 250 GB IDE Hard Drive

1 Answer

Silly question Hello, I just need to know if I am supposed to be stopping and disconnecting my external maxtor hard drive before I turn off my computer (PC). I dont leave it on because I have been having problems with it shutting down. This is my first time with an external hard drive and I can't find the answer looking at the Maxtor help screen. I have it plugged into the back of the computer because I couldn't get my windows to recognize it plugged in the front. Thanks, MSG

Short answer....No.... your PC stops all ther services as it shuts down, however if you are going to remove ther drive before shutting down use the disconect USB device icon ( usually next to the clock) to stop your drive before removing it

Try a different "data" cable between your computer and the external disk-drive.

If there is an external power-supply, borrow a "multimeter", and test that the power-supply is supplying power (correct voltage and correct amperage).

Try connecting it to another computer.

Disassemble it, and disconnect the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter. Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, and see if the disk is working.

If it still is under warranty, either your local retail store, or Maxtor/Seagate will honour the warranty, and replace it.

COMPUTER DOES NOT RECOGNIZE 3200, 100GB MAXTOR STORAGE.

Hello

Ok, here is a couple of thing we can try to resolve your problem. Firstly, power down the computer, unplug all the wires from the external, plug all back in, and start the computer with the drive attached. This usually solve this problem.

The other thing is, if you turn on the external can you hear the drive spinning up? If not, i will suggestthat you try a new ac adapter...This will almost always solve this problem. The thing is, It's not supplying enough power to do anything but turn that silly little green/blue light on, thus, windows cannot recognise the drive, or, the drive won't start spinning.

Please do nt hesitate to let me know if you need any further assistance. Try the above steps, and let me know what happens.

I already posted this in your previous question.

Kind Regards
Andrea

If you really want those files, try DriveSavers.com. They do wonders with dead hard drives (known to have recovered files off a burned hard disk). But it comes with a hefty price. So check their website, http://www.drivesavers.com/.
