Question about NetGear RangeMax WPN824 Router

Cannot connect to the internet

I have a wpn824 router. i can connect to my router (wireless) fine. I can connect to the internet fine (wired). I just had comcast installed yesterday. the modem they gave me is an rca dcm425. i want go wireless again but when i connect them together, I cannot connect to the internet. Can someone help?

    I too have the same problem.

    I have an existing Netgear Router that has been working with Comcast for years. And it still works!!

    The old modem is set to get the IP / DNS from the ISP automatically. (I assume this means enable dhcp on the WAN side.)

    I have logged into the WPN824 router via www.routerlogin.net and set it up the same way. When I connect it to the Comcast Modem it does not negotiate an IP and thus no internet connection.

    Right now I have the WPN824 connected to my old netgear router. It does negotiate an IP, so I have Internet connectivity, but only because I have my old router in the middle of the connection.

    Obviously I would like the WPN824 to work directly with the Comcast modem and get rid of my old router.

    @anon One of our cable companies locks in the MAC address of the first connected equipment to prevent "theft" of internet services...or so they say. It may be something as simple as cloning the MAC address of the old equipment onto the 824.

    You're missing a half-a-million steps to this installation. Did you start with a used router? What IP address does the wired connection give you? Did you go to www.routerlogin.com to get to the router?



    You may have to call comcast customer support to find out if you have a static or dynamic IP address and/or turn off the DHCP of the RCA box. routerlogin will auto detect most of your settings if you let it, or you may have to supply the username and password to you internet connection.



    Just a couple of ideas.

Here are some troubleshooting steps that I suggest you try:

1. Check physical connections.

a. Connect the modem to the Internet port of the router. The Internet “i” LED on the front of the router should light up.
b. Connect the computer to one of the four LAN ports (i.e port 1, 2, 3 or 4) on the back of the router. The corresponding port light where you connected the computer should be lit up.

2. Access the router's web-based utility.

a. Please open any web browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
b. Connect to the router by typing http://routerlogin.com/basicsetting.htm or http://192.168.1.1 in the address field and click Enter or Return key.
c. A window will prompt for a user name and password. By default, the user name is "admin" and the password is "password".

Note: If you were unable to access the router's web-based utility, you may reset the router to restore the settings to factory default.

To reset the router:

a. Please push the reset button at the back of the router and release after 30 seconds.
b. Unplug the power adapter for 10 seconds and then plug it back in.

3. Configure the router.

If your Internet Service Provider is using a cable connection, please follow the steps below:

a. Click on Basic Settings under Setup tab.
b. Select No for Does Your Internet Connection Require A Login?.
c. Scroll down on the center page and look for the Router MAC Address section. Set it to Use computer MAC address and click on the Apply button.

If your Internet Service Provider is using a DSL connection, please follow the steps below:

a. Click on Basic Settings.
b. Select Yes for Does Your Internet Connection Require A Login?.
c. Select Other on the Internet Service Provider drop down box.
d. Enter your ISP's username (username@ISPdomain) and password. Then, click on Apply.

4. Configure the wireless settings.

a. Click on the Wireless Settings under Setup.
b. Change the SSID to any unique name.
c. Scroll down, look for the Security Options settings and select WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy).
d. Set the Authentication type to "Automatic" and the Encryption Strength to "64bit".
e. Leave the Passphrase field blank, select Key 1 and enter a 10-digit number.

Note: The 10-digit number you typed in the key 1 will be the password or network key for the wireless connection.

f. Click Apply button to save the changes.
g. Go to Router Status under Maintenance tab and check if there is an IP address under Internet port. If it's 0.0.0.0, do a power cycle.

5. Power cycle.

a. Power off the modem, router and computers.
b. Turn on the power of the modem first and wait for it to initialize, the lights to stop blinking.
c. Power back the router and the computers. Check if it will be able to get online.

If you have wireless computers, you can connect them wireless to the router. Kindly follow the instructions below:

6. Connect wireless computer to the router.

If you are using Windows XP with Service Pack 1, please follow the steps below:

a. Please right click on the Wireless icon on the right lower end portion of your computer.
b. Then click on View Available Wireless Networks.
c. Click on the Advanced tab.
d. Please delete all the preferred networks then click on OK.
e. Right click on the Wireless icon again and click on View Available Wireless Network. Please select your network and click on Connect. It will ask you for the network key.
f. Please type in the network key and then confirm it. Network key is the password you type on the key 1 of the wireless settings of the router.
g. Make sure not to enable IEEE and then click on Connect.

If you are using Windows XP with Service Pack 2, please follow the steps below:

a. Please right click on the Wireless icon on the right lower end portion of your computer.
b. Then click on View Available Wireless Networks.
c. Click on the Change Advanced Settings.
d. Click on the Wireless Networks tab remove all the preferred networks then click on OK.
e. Right click on the Wireless icon then click on View Available Wireless Networks.
f. Select your network and click on Connect.
g. It will ask you for the network key. Type in the network key and confirm it. Then click on Connect. Network key is the password you type on the key 1 of the wireless settings of the router.

If you are using Windows Vista, please follow the steps below:

a. Click Start then select Connect To.
b. Connect to a network window will show up.
c. Select your wireless network and click Connect.
d. It will ask you for a network key. Type in the network key and confirm it. Then click on Connect.

From the above configuration, please check if you can now access the Internet.

I just bought a Sony Bravia TV and am trying to connect it to the internet via my WPN824v2 LAN - it's not working and the LAN lights never light up on my router. Wireless connections are fine - even new...


I spent the last day trying to solve this, what worked was:

Refresh Internet Content
Wait (a while) until it Authenticates

Normal Internet service resumed :-)

I can get the wired internet through my WPN824 RangeMax, but not the wireless. It shows a good signal, but it won't connect. I use cable. What am I doing wrong?


You are able to go online when the computer is wired, that means the wired connection is working.
open the router set up page and check the wireless settings of the router.

Check the wireless security settings and also check if the wireless MAC filter is disabled. If it is enabled then disable it.

Netgear Wireless Router won't work with my Linksys wired router.


As asked above, why would you want the wired router and the wireless router on the same network?

The direct answer to your question(s) is found on Netgear's website. http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/965/kw/wpn824/r_id/166

The key is to turn off the Netgear DHCP, and give it an address that is unreachable by the Linksys DHCP ie if the Linksys gives out IP addresses starting at 100 or 101, you set your IP address to 99, turn off the DHCP, and plug it into the network NOT using the WAN port, ever. We tend to start at 251 or 221 just for clarity's sake.

The point is you answered your own question. The Netgear wired and wireless works fine. One piece of equipment and better reporting statistics....what are you missing?

Ip adress : 192.168.1.200 ( or any number not used by pc )
Dns : 192.168.1.1
Gateway : same as DNS

There is a possibility that the router setting might set back to its default settings. you may try this and see if this help solve your problem. make sure your computer is directly connected to the router

Step 1: Shutdown the computer.
Step 2: reset the router while power on then Unplug the router’s power cable.
Step 3: Unplug the Broadband modem’s power cable and wait for 30 seconds.
Step 4: Plug in the Broadband modem’s power cable and wait for its lights to appear stable.
Step 5: Plug in the router's power cable once the modem’s lights appear stable.
Step 6: Power on the computer on
Step 7: test the Internet connection.

Wpn 824 wireless issues.


if you have set up the wireless connection and enable it in the router, i assume you have disconnected the wired RJ45 cable to the pc, if not do so, as the pc's ip address is still being sent to the wired adapter and needs to be giving the wireless adapter an ip address itself as you cannot have two. Either remove cable or dissable the wired network card and ensure you enabled DHCP in the router settings to automatically give the pc an ip address, ensuring that thw wireless card is also set to obtain an ip address automatically in the TCP/IP properties of the wireless network adapter.
