I am trying to switch my band from 2.4GHz to 5GHz. Need detailed instructions on how to do this. I am not real computer savey.

First, Access the router configuration utility, open a web-browser (such as Internet Explorer) and enter the IP address of the router ( Select Admin from the drop-down menu and then enter your password. Leave the password blank by default. (Defaults IP Address, User Name and Password Details are also written on the underside of the router).
Goto Wireless Settings - then Wireless and select 2.4GHz if you want to use the 2.4GHz band or 5GHz band if you want to use the 5GHz band. Save settings and its done.

For further details you may refer to D-Link DIR-628 Product Manual

Let me know if any further clarification/ assistance is required.
Hope it helps! Good Luck!

I have defined 2 networks, one for the G and the other for the N channel, only the one for the G gets connected

You have WRT610N dual band router . it works on both 2.4 GHz and 5 Ghx bands at the same time.
Both the bands are N bands.
2.4 GHz and 5 GHz band are capable of working on N signals.
Now on your computer you are able to see only the 2.4 GHz signals but not the 5 GHz signals.
To see the wireless signal on the computer , your computer should have 5 GHz compatible wireless adapter.
If you have 2.4 GHZ adapter on your computer then you won't be able to connect to the 5 Ghz signal.
Open the Device manager and under network adapters you will see the wireless adapter. Check if it is dual band wireless adapter.

WRT54G intermittently working

Well...buying a new router might not fix the problem if you can't find the cause for it.
Blueextc is right that the signal could be weak or interrupted. (Just on a side note: he is wrong about the frequencies. 802.11b and 802.11g use the 2.4 GHz ISM band, 802.11a uses the 5 GHz U-NII band, and 802.11n transmit at a frequency of 2.4GHz or 5 GHz)
Therefore, sometimes a wireless telephone, if placed too closed to the router, can cause interferece, because it is also working in the 2.4 GHz spectrum. Microwave, cabling in the wall - all reasons for bad reception.

So just buying a new router might not solve the problem.

Upgrading the firmware or - even better - changing to something like tomato, can solve a lot of issues. If you need assistance with the procedures, come back here and I am happy to help.
