i have the same problem unable to finalise disc

  • eastmans Dec 02, 2008

my phillips dvd/hdd recorder was allowing me to finalize then doesnt allow any more.

  • Molly Wray Jan 04, 2009

I did 8 transfers of vhs to dvd with my phillips and they all finalized fine.

I'm now stick. I try to finalize but don't think anything has been recorded

in the disc in the first place, and that's why it won't finalize. The record button is lit and it says I'm recording but I don't know if it really is. When I put the disc in my computer or put it into the player, it identifies it as a

blank disc...even though it went through a 2+hour recording process with the red record light on the whole time.

Here is the tec line phone number 1-800-PHILIPS (744-5477).
if you call the tec line they will ask Model and Serial Numbers and when you bought it

but this is what i found out:
take the disc out,
put it back in and let it load to disc menu screen then press STOP,
no press SETUP button on remote and got to "Disc Edit"
then select "Finalize" and verify "Yes"
it will take a few mins. to finalize
This worked for me!

My Phillips works by following steps. Almost same as original comment.

    1) put dvd on tray

    2) close tray
    player loading disc menu

    3) press "STOP" button on your remote
    get blue screen on TV

    4) press "SETUP" button on your remote

    5) select menu "Disc edit" fom screen using button on remote

    6) select "Finalize" from screen

    7) select "Yes" from screen
    Wait while to get finalized.

SOURCE: Magnavox DVD recorder...finalizing problem

The manual isn't too helpful either - "Recording error other than below," it says. There are a couple of possibilities. The Philips/Magnavox/Funai recorders automatically record in VR mode when you use +R discs (there are two possible recording modes - V Mode and VR Mode). Is it possible that you have switched disc types lately? If you are currently using -R discs, switch to +R and vice versa. The manual states that +/-RW discs take a while to initialize.

I couldn't find a full factory reset on that one, so you may have to unplug the unit for about 20 minutes to restore all the defaults.

Another possibility: Finalization requires some extra space on the disc. If you accidentally pressed the button that changes the recording format between SP, EP, LP, etc., you may not be able to fit the same amount of video on the disc that you were able to fit before. You can change the format by pressing the Disc Mode button on the remote - LP Mode will fit 3 hours worth of recordings onto a 2-hr disc and is considered a "medium quality" recording. Try changing the Disc Mode to LP and see if it will finalize the next disc that you record. The downside of this possibility is that the discs that you have already made that are giving you errors are not "fixable" - you will will have to re-record the shows to a new disc in LP mode.

Good luck!

SOURCE: cAN RECORD FROM VCR TO DVD+R, CAN PLAY DVD ON

Usually you finalize the disc after loading it with all the desired content (leaving a bit of space for the finalization). So if you are recording a TV show, depending on the setting (SP, LP, XP), you might finalize the disc after recording 4 1/2 shows. The How may vary by model but on my DVD recorder, I find the finalize command in the same menu area as adding a title and initializing a DVD-RW disc. So I press Setup to enter the OSD menu, then go down to Disc (looks like an optical disc) then right arrow to enter the sub menu. Then press down to Disc Finalize and the right arrow again and press enter. Select OK and Enter again. (RW discs can be unfinalized to add more content.) Then wait until the process is done.

I hope this helps.

We have a vcr/dvd, model dvp620vr/07, we are having probs recording our pics onto a dvd and having the recorder play it, our computer will, why not the vcr/dvd recorder, what kind of disc do we need to...

What program or software are you using to make the DVD? The DVD must be "finalized" before it can be read on an external device, such as a VCR/DVD player. PC's however, can handle the un-finalized (is that a word?) discs because it assumes you may want to add more files (pictures). Once the disc is finalized, no more files can be added to it.

Playing recorded DVDs on PC or other DVD player

Recordings from your DVD recorder should play on other DVD players as long as you finalize the recording on your recorder.

A PC should recognise an un-finalized, but only in a DVD writer drive.

There is a firmware upgrade available for this model. Follow this link and select your particular country version DVDR3320/XX

http://www.support.philips.com/support/html/index_gb_en.html#../~scripts/xsltransformsearch.asp?url=http://www.sms.philips.com/catalogue/list?sid=SMS||type=CONSUMER||locale=gb_en||mode=prod_text||item=dvdr3320v||page=1||show=50&xsl=search_result.xsl

Select Software & Drivers and click on the link to the zip file.

Follow the on-screen instructions.

DVD PLAYS CD'S BUT WONT PLAY DVD'S

Aquarius0128 there are two things to consider here.. dvd's recorded on a computer need to be closed/finalized after you have recorded onto them in order to be used on a stand alone player.. they will play ok on original recorder because of the design of these machines finalizing prepares the structure of the disc so it can be recognised by other players as a dvd video disc.. you will usually see a 'finalize disc' option in your recording program

Second issue is this.. even if finalized an older (or even some modern) stand alone players will not recognise a recorded disc made on a computer or even if it can there are different formats DVD+R DVD-R and even DVD-RAM and DVD-RW (the two latter ones are rarely recognised outside a computer)
